has any one put an 8.8 ford under their runner!!! it sounds like a good upgrade, disc brakes!! does anyone make ford five lug to toyota 6 lug wheel adapters??? any help?

Many companies make disc brake conversions, for about the same cost and 1/4 the work. PLus you stick with the Toyota parts.

 

I think ill have to agree with the guys over at pirate that just ripped you a new one. the ford 8.8 is pretty much crap. It wouldnt be worth the effort. Why not just stick with toyota parts that have been proven. Toyota rear axles rarely need upgraded and the brakes really arnt that bad unless you are running BIG tires.

 

I've seen PLENTY of Jeeps running 8.8's, 37's and 200hp/220tq or more power, no problems. I don't know where the yota axle sits in strength, but I do know that the 8.8 IS stronger than a D44 in just about every way. It is a great axle, just probably not ideal for yota's since they have a decent axle when coupled to four angry rodents under the hood, and the fact the lug pattern is different. Here's some stats as far as strenth goes.

Dana 35 rear axle COT: 870 MOT: 3480
Dana 44 rear axle COT: 1100 MOT: 4460
Ford 8.8 28spline COT: 1250 MOT: 4600

Dana60 semifloat COT: 1500 MOT: 5500

 

The Ford 8.8 is a circlip axle. It is strong, to a point, but I believe that the Toyota remains the better option. I have helped two friends put 8.8's under their Jeeps to remedy the POS D35 problem. One version had 4.10 gearing and an LSD (clutch-style).
It is a great axle for Jeep guys to use as an upgrade without going full-width; however, I (personally) would not have the same confidence running a 37" tire on the 8.8 like I do with my Toyota 8".

 

Toyota is 30 spline, but it has pressed on bearings that give you SOME chance of holding the wheel on if you break an axle (where the 8.8 circlip design it's coming right out immediately).

Swapping to the 8.8 seems like a lot of work just to get disc brakes and little other benefit. The money and time would be MUCH better spent upgrading your Toyota rear axle to full float.

 

thanks for all the advice. that is why i ask the questions before i do some redneck swap for no reason. how much do those disc brake kits cost? don't answer i'll just research on my own front range, and who else?
