That would not cause the noise because in the pan you have an oil pickup that has a screen on it, so that would not get sucked up. Plus if it had you would have heard more than just a ticking. How many miles are on it, and where does the sound, sound like its coming from. I know that the 3.0 uses valve shims, maybe some kind of valve adjustment is in order.

Honestly it looks as if some has done on oil pan gasket and left the old plug washer in there. I would look somewhere else. Check the top end. You can take a long flat head and put the butt in your ear and put over each valve, and see if it gets louder on a certain valve.

I think most probably it was a washer that is used with the head bolts. The 3.0 takes one with a 7/16 inside diameter. You put it on the head bolt and lube it and torque the bolt down. I assume your engine has had the HG replaced in the past.

What happened was that in removing the bolt, this washer was left on the head and slipped down into the inner workings. The mechanic didn't notice this and he put a new steel washer on when he put the head bolt back on. Should not be a problem for your engine other than the washer got into the wrong places.

Looks like a banjo fitting washer, not sure how that would end up in the pan though.

It does look like a banjo washer, if its a thin, copper washer. They are very distinctive - nothing else in a HG job looks like them. Used on the fuel lines on top of the intake. Easy to fall into the engine. full The HG washers I referred to above are thicker steel, but I can't tell from the picture just how sturdy this one is or used to be.

I'll bet it's a banjo washer from the cold start injector

No. That washer more than likely got in there during a repair job when the motor was open (head gaskets, valve cover gaskets ect.).

They dropped it down one of the oil journals during a head job. It got whacked by a rod before settling in the pan. I found the exact same thing, sans dent, in my oil pan when I did my rebuild. The "tick" you are hearing is MOST LIKELY a noisy fuel injector. The 3vze is notorious for noisy injectors.

Remove spark plug wires one at a time; if the tick/knock goes away on one of them, you have a rod going out.

Are you sure it isn't aluminum (with a little oil baked on to give it a nice brown tone)? In the '94 at least, all the banjo washers are aluminum. It does look like the right size, and if I recall correctly, you've got three sizes to choose from.

How did it get there? Very easy. Once the valve covers are off (you don't even need to remove the heads) there are large oil passages down into the pan. You could drop a 10mm wrench down there and not see it again. (Okay, a wrench you would hear.)

I believe he said that it ticks under acceleration. So an idle test may not help. Could he try driving it with a plug wire off?
