'97 4Runner oil recom., I live in Costa Rica

Greetings from Costa Rica,
I recently purchased a 1997 v6 4Runner 4x4 (imported from USA) but it did not come with an owners manual....I live in Costa Rica on dirt roads which kicks up a lot of dust. How often should i change the oil and what type of oil (brand, etc...ie, 15w/20w, etc...)....and what type of oil filter? The average temp. is about 90 degrees, and I drive the truck about 50 miles/week, mostly on flat unpaved roads at 30 mph and 2x/mo i get to drive on paved roads when I go grocery shopping...and up to my house on a hill i put in 4x4 (about 2 miles).....many thanks.

5w30 or 10w30. OEM oil filter. Every 5K or less. With all that dust change the air filter too.

Toyota filter from the dealer. You can get them cheap compared to autozone crap FRAM filters. But I don't think there is an autozone there...... It is the "D1" filter but you can go to the "D3" filter, it is bigger and was made for the v8 newer 4runner and newer 4.0L V6 4Runner. It probably wouldn't have that info in your owners manual anyway. Valvoline 5w30 is a good oil.

The part number for the oem oil filter is 90915-20003. it's available from the toyota dealer only.

with the speed and kind of roads that you're running your 4Runner, i would recommended to replace your oil, oil filter at every 3000 km. the 5000 km replacement interval is recommended for normal conditions only. the transmission, differential and transfer case oils will need to be replaced at every 15,000 km. if there is an oil analyzer lab in your area, you might like to have your oil checked, then maybe it would be alright to increase the replacement interval. but normally, toyota recommends to halve the replacement interval for those vehicles mostly used in dusty roads and low speed conditions.

about the air filter, i would also recommend to do halve the recommended replacement interval recommended from the guide below:

no ac filter...
am not familiar with fram filters but you might like to check this website: http://www.fram.com/products/oilFilters.php#oilFilters1

the oem filter has the following specs:
type: full flow
outside diameter: 74 mm
height: 85 mm
it has a backflow control valve to retain oil inside when engine is shut off
the screw size is 3/4-16UNF

hth

edit: the oil type for the differentials, transfer case is 75W90 GL5
for manual transmission, 75W90 GL4
for a/t, the atf is Dexron II or Dexron III
for power steering fluid, same as atf
