If your hell bent on doing it, swap EVERYTHING from the 90 to the 85

yes you will have problems wiring If you needed to start a thread about doing so.

Since you have both trucks side ide it should not be a problem at all, and yes swap everything, perhaps including the cluster.

Would it be easier for you to just swap the bodies?

Please, don't do this, it isn't worth it, I have never heard of people swapping a manual to an auto, just the other way around. This idea in essence is called in the most gentle terms "stupid". Early pickups and 4runners are always better with a 5spd, I had an 88 4runner Auto and it sucked on the highway and the gas sucked too, and that was the 3.0, the 22re is even slower with an Auto. Just forget about it and don't do it, and everyone on this site will agree with me.

Sorry about the rant, but that is not a good idea.

BTW, Welcome to Yota Tech

both are 4 runners

the 90 blackk body is banged up from a wreck the engine purrs beautifully though...

the only reason why i wanted to swap was because my wife doesnt know how to drive a stick has had a hard time learning and if for what ever reason she needed to drive it i needed her to be able to. if i change it to auto and decide it sucks is it a mess too change it back to stick?

is there anyway to make the auto run faster? will it run slower than when that engine was in my auto 90? because the 90 wasnt bad at all

also ive seen one 85 auto changed to a stick with a kit why isnt it as easy?

There is ALOT of wiring differences between 85-90

So your saying you want to change it to an auto then change it into a stick?

Make an auto run faster? yes, throw it in the back of a 5spd Toy and haul it to the scrap yard, thats the fastest i've got 3 Toy autos to run

What is this "kit" you keep talking about? I've 5spd swapped and i saw ZERO need for a kit, just the trans, clutch kit, flywheel, throw it in, cut a hole, run the lines, master, slave and pedals, and jump the NSS.

Not necessarily. Depends on what the truck is being used for. If it a dd and you have to sit in rush hour stop and go, and/or trail rig I would go with an auto.

If its a dd and trail rig and you dont have to sit in stop and go then I would go with the 5speed.

Given that you have an 85 and a 90 Im assuming that the 85 is a trail rig and the 90 is your dd. Which in this case the swap makes perfect sense.

I also wont 100% of the time agree. As someone who has owned a 22re auto, 3.0 auto, 3.0 stick, 3.4 auto. I can say that the 22re is sloooooow, but it has its place, like for instance your wife cant drive stick , or if you are building a serious crawler and want to run a 22re. In those cases an auto makes perfect sense over a stick.

But for me sticks are way more fun on road and autos are more capable offroad.
