I'm at work right now. Was going to make a trip to the dmv but the clutch in my '96 falls to the floor and doesn't come back up. Sounds like a bad slave or master but there is no fluid leaking anywhere. The clutch fluid reservoir is full. Any ideas? Hoping to avoid getting a tow home but that seems unlikely.

 

Is it engaged?

No fluid leak on the inside floor board?
Try pumping it 20 times or somethin and see if it builds any pressure

 

clutch is engaged. The first time I press the pedal it goes down, clutch disengages, and the pedal comes maybe half way up. Second or third time I press the pedal it drops to the floor and doesn't come back up. Clutch is still engaged at this point.

 

well I pumped that sucker about 50 times and it's working a lot better now. Hopefully I can make it home. My local dealer doesn't have either hte slave or master in stock and would have to special order. Autozone doesn't have the parts either. I'll probably be riding my motorcycle the next few days.

 

Definitely check for leaking inside the cabin near the back of the pedal. Sounds like a Master Cylinder that's going bad. Mine had a slow leak and took a while for the fliud to drain. You could notice the dampness in the carpet and the wetness in the floor with the carpet pulled by the pedal. If it's the master, it's a fairly easy replacement.

 

Replaced the master cylinder last night. Everything works great now.

FWIW, there was no dampness anywhere near the clutch pedal and looking at the old master cylinder there weren't any signs of leakage.
