Poor Mans Welding Kart

Well the Creeper was good for a day and all..So here's my solution, Nothing special, And its a work in progress..

The other day I picked up some 1x2x3/16ths and some 1/4 angle iron just to practice my beads on..
Then I got the Idea to make a welding cart with it...
Heres what im starting with...

Like I said, work in progress, And itll look alot better when its done..

How about a little closer with the camera.
Its hard to see what is going on there.

I'm sure it will come out just fine.

Try not to use an extension cord for that welder , or if you have to the shorter the better.

Good luck !!!

That never crossed my mind, Shorter extension cord, check. thanks RMA.

Got the main body welded up, my camera sucks and I forgot how much I love welding weird angles.. So no bead pron

But here are a few of the structure...

TOP

Thats it for tonight.

tomorrow Ill have the some angle iron on the sides so its more secure

I need more rectangle stock, And some thinner angle iron, not to mention some thin stuff for a shelf under this thing..

Im thinking itll have 16" legs. Other then that im going with the flow..

EDIT: Suggestions, Comments, Let them fly...

Watch a "How to Weld Video" online

Prep the metal. After welding, clean the slag off.

Practice. Practice. Practice.

Wholly crap what did you do to that poor steel !

Keep it up, practice is all you need, and maybe some anti-spatter.

Okay obviously you are using flux.

I really hate flux BTW. But, its strong as long as you are getting good penetration which is very hard to tell. I know this may sound stupid, but are you sure you have the welder setup for flux correctly? That spatter is very unusual and seems very excessive even for flux.

I know its hard to tell what your welds look like with flux, so make sure you clean the welds after welding as well as before.

At this point, I will highly recommend getting a Mig mix bottle and switching to MIG. You won't burn the piss out of yourself and everything else in the garage, and it makes a MUCH cleaner weld with MUCH less spatter. Just don't forget to check the polarity to make sure the welder is wired for it.

I have the same Welder and I have welded with flux cord wire. And there is no way there should be that much splatter.

Open up the side (the little door thing) and there should be a graph that tells you what the welder should be on for the particular metal

In the bottom right corner there is a picture on how to set up the polarity.

The wires you have to switch are right by the wire feeder.

make sure you don't drop the wing nut into the little whole right by there its a huge pain in the ass to fish those suckers out

See thats the thing, Regarding polarity...

The other day I was looking at that, And it was on mig with ground negative.
I put it to ground positive like it says for flux cored but then my welds were coming out verrrrry crappy...today Ill play around with it a bit, Thanks for the suggestions guys...

EDIT, Just so everyone knows my history, I welded with stick and mig back in high school for about 2.5 years, So I sorta know what im doing..Its just been a while..

I foresee a slag hammer in your immediate future. Judging by the burn stains in your photo, you have quite a bit of adjusting to do. BTW, did you use a torch to cut that metal?? Keep at it and you will eventually get it, be one with the metal young jeddi.....

I thought the purpose of welding carts was to get it off the floor and allow it to move easier...

Go find some nice wheels and put them on... My $.02

I can watch someone all i want but unless im explained what to do its hard to learn..

I feel if you watched a couple quick vids then you should be okay to get the basics..

Then just keep going over some scrap metal to learn.. No matter what think you know, unless you know how to setup and operate the machine correctly your not going to get a good weld in different conditions..

open up the flap on the welder and adjust the setting to the recommended settings for that size metal and start from there. Make sure the polarity is correct.

If your goin to alot of welding or have a project like bumper or somehing heavy duty go rent a co2 gas tank its not that expensive also change the wire your running to .030 or .035. I like those little lincoln welders just turn the power up the wire speed up and move faster I takes practice but penetration is key* also clean the metal so there is no rust or oil on it, that will also make it harder to get a good bead. Also remember that if you weld thicker material to thinner material you want to point the gun more at the thicker material so you get good penetration. Good luck

Well I switched the polarity and i didnt get amazing welds, but they were ok, i do have alot of practice I know.

And mike, Yes the purpose is to get it off the floor, if you actually read post 4 instead of just looking at the pretty pictures You'da read "Im thinking itll have 16" legs with some wheels and a shelf underneath.."

Again, Thanks for the pointers guys, I have a slag hammer, just didnt have saftey glasses when I was doing those first practice welds on the stock itself, thats why they look like butt.

We should post pictures of our first welding jobs.

I've done some pretty nice looking welds with flux core, but my first stuff looked like poo. Now I have a nive new tig welder I need to hook up.

I USED to be able to do some beautiful stuff with the migs in my old shop class, but this little flux core is another story...

Oh, So someone said something about co2 bottle, there's one sitting in my garage right now...
Say's "High pressure aluminum CO2 Bottle"

Do I get straight CO2 or mix..?
And anyone know about how much it'll be to fill up...?
I would need to get hoses and pressure reg's. Plus the original 10lb spool of the flux thats in there still has alot too it, so i figured id just use it till its gone..

x2 on the anti-spatter spray. The welds I have pictured in my bumper build thread are done with flux core and the spray. Then I just took a wire brush to them and that's how they look. just hit the big spatters that stick with a flathead screwdriver and hammer and they pot right off. Keep it up!
