I did the OME lift with Bilstiens and I love it!!!
However, after reading Steve's web page: Sonroansteel.com I might have gone with one of his kits. His research is thorough and well documented. He has had the luxury to run several different setups and has put together some great pacakges

All Toyota components (and Bilstein) sold me on Sonoran Steel. And their customer service is awesome.
OME kits work well to help you carry more weight... they are not truly designed as a lift kit. You will get a better ride overall with the SS kits.

I've installed both and ridden in vehicles with both. They both perform very well.
It really depends on the ride you want and what you are accustomed to currently, what you are looking to do with the vehicle, budget, personal preference, etc.
You won't go wrong with either setup.

OME just uses longer springs and shocks just like some SS kits. They lift 3.0- 3.5 inches in the back over stock just like some of the SS kits. Obviously some of the SS kits are geared more for offroad like the 1.2 lift but some are not. Depends on how much you want to spend and what use you're looking for.

I pieced my lift together......
I wanted adjustables up front, and fj80 springs were too high for 33's, but i carry a lot of weight. So i went with 891's with 5125's. I have some used fj80 coils to slap in when i swap it to get another inch or so.

wow. lots of good info. i guess for my rig i'm just lookin for a little more clearance than stock. i've geared up 3 different wranglers, but i've never done any yotas. my budget is geared more towards OME but after reading the comments on the SS website i'm a little nervous about shocks breaking and having to spend more money in the long run. I don't hit the trails as much as i used to (maybe 4-5 times a year) and i don't want to overkill with the SS @ $1,200.

i'm also worried about having to additional mods. the people i have spoken to at OME say that their 2.5" kit is designed to replace the stock shocks and coils without having to do ANY other mods to my rig. Has anyone found out the hard way that that isn't necessarily true?

But i am running 3-3.5" of lift in the rear. With the 2.5 I wouldn't worry about the rear mods.

Yeah, the SS kits are really sweet but my budget can't allow for something like that. They are a nice system indeed and do use an OME 890 spring for one of the kits.
If you decided to stick to "piecing it together"...then a Bilstein or OME shock shouldnt' fail you. They are good shocks and offer great warranties.
The only other modification you should make would be a front differential drop to accomodate the added angle to the CV. The rule of thumb is generally any lift over an inch should have this installed. Otherwise...depending on your use...replacing CVs will be common.
