Is this a good thing in lieu of a winch or if you're out alone?

I'll say it before someone else does - Don't go out alone. (I know, sometimes ya gotta get away - I do it too.)
Anyway, the Wyeth-Scott is far superior to other come-alongs and a great addition to other tools. I wouldn't use it as a direct replacement for a winch, though. The line reach is the biggest issue - you've got about 15' to work with on the Wyeth-Scott, which is fine if you've got an anchor within 15' of your truck and don't need to be pulled very far. Any farther and you're limited to the lengths of the additional cables, straps or chains you've got with you.
A better option, although more expensive, are hand-winches like the Brano, Tirfor and Black Rat. Check out the Brano HERE.

A highlift jack can be used as a winch. Its time consuming though but will get your out of a bad situation . Works good with a snatch block. Also need various lengths of chain to make it usable.
It can also be used as a jack

Yes, more often than not I like to get away by myself or with my girlfriend. Nothing major but I want some insurance just in case- you never know. I would never attempt anything serious without a follow vehicle.

Thanks, I think those are just what I was looking for!
