i have a 95 4runner that is leaking water from the back of the motor. it only leaks after about 30mins. i was told it may be a leaking freeze plug. i was wondering if anyone else had this problem. if so is this something i could fix my self or will i have to take it some where

its the 3.0 v6 2wd auto trans

 

there are a lot of coolant hoses back there. clean it up as best as you can then take it for a short drive. start looking from the top down until you find the leak. a mirror might be helpful.

 

I'm not an expert, but I've ahd this happen to me. I had a leak in the front from a hose that I've sence replaced, and the fan and wind was blowing the cooland back and making it look like it was dripping from the rear of the engine.

 

I had the something happen to me on my 92'. What mine was the heater junction box(i think thats what they call it) it the block behind the intake manifold with the hoses coming out of it. well any ways the gasket on it had failed causing coolant to come out from the rear behind the engine. Simiple 30 min fix, if you don't break egr pipe try to get the intake manifold off.

 

There are lots of hoses and sensors and freeze plugs back there. It could be the sensor block on the back of the intake manifold (or any of the sensors tapped into that block) or it could be a heater hose line that comes from the firewall. A freeze plug. Or in my case is was the number 1 water by pass hose that runs out from the back between the heads. I was able to get a good look at what was leaking by looking up through the drivers side wheel well (taking the tire off helps with visability).

oh and if its a freeze plug you will have to pull the engine out of the truck to get at it. You will need room to swing a hammer.

Get a shop mirror or a thin cell phone that can take video or pictures and hold it back behind the motor and see if you can see what is leaking. Just don't drop the cell.
