2.4 Vs. 2.7
Hey guys, I've been tooling around this forum for a while to get info and ideas, but I'm not an avid thread writer. I can usually find what I need by searching. But this time I'm asking for help.
I recently sold my cruiser and am looking for a good Tacoma. I want a 4cyl and most of what I am finding out there is the 2.7 litre. Does anybody have any input on this motor? Is it just a stroked out 2.4? Are they as reliable as the 2.4? A buddy of mine had a 2.7 and he didn't really like; he ended up trading it for a 3.4 model.
Does anyone have any arguements for either engine?

Ive had 2 Yotas with the 2.7 and i love it. On my 4Runner i flipped it at 45MPH, rolled it back over, tightened the alt belt and started it up, the motor is still running amazing.
On my Taco i just bought, the guy hadnt preformed any matinence in more than a year and there was only 2 of the 5 quarts of oil in the motor and barely any antifreeze. I drained the oil and it looked like black sand, i thought for sure the motor was toast. A couple cans of seafoam and 6k miles later, i havent had a single problem.
The only problem i have had with the 2.7 is the exhuast manifold cracking.

uhh, they put the 2.4's in 4wd's also!\
anyhoo, i love my 2.7. good power (for a 4banger) decent mileage.
i have a 125k and the only thing i have to complain about is a cracked manifold. but i replaced it with stainless header now all is well

They did NOT put a 2.4L 2RZ in a 4wd, ever.
We are talking Tacomas here, not the 2.4L 22RE.
The 2.4L 2RZ was used only in 2WD Non-prerunner Tacomas
The 2.7L 3RZ was used in 4WD, and PreRunner models, as well as 4Runners and T100 trucks.
Despite being an interference chain drive motor, the 3RZ (2.7L) is pretty good. LC Engineering has even figured out a way to get 1200hp from these engines. They are fairly bulletproof, with regular maintinence.

Thanks you guys. It sounds like the 2.7 is a good motor. I've been looking at a couple '97's to blow my tax returns on; both of them have 2.7's. Can't wait to get another Toy.

The dizzy was used through 5/97 for the 2.4L 2rz, and through 12/96 in the 2.7 3RZ IIRC.
When the front end designed changed to the composite headlights, they changed the engine to the coil pack style in the 2WD. You CAN find the coil pack sealed beam front end, but it is pretty rare since they changed the front end 1/2 way through 97
