hey guys im new to yotatech and i have a issue with one of my 89 yotas...the exhaust manifold glows bright (its easily seen in my fender at night) i just noticed it yesterday what would cause this? i thought maybe cloaged cat but i dont know just lookin for some advise it does have an exhaust leak inbetween the manifold and downpipe if that helps any info would be great

 

if it was a clogged cat I think just the cat would glow, IIRC.

Most likely you are running very lean.

Often this is caused by a clogged or partially clogged catalytic converter. This could be tested very easily with a vacuum gauge.

 

Look at it this way, you got "stock" ground effects

 

check your valve clearances, check your ignition timing and make sure you are not running rich... which an exhaust leak could cause.

 

running rich will cause this, The others have given you several ideas. One more is that you could have a bad injector that is supplying too much fuel. How does the truck run? does it misfire at all? Does it still have a good amount of power?

 

thanks guys that makes sense it does run pretty decent but its hard to hear a misfire with the exhaust leak but i do feel its lacking power im gonna start with the exhaust and see what happens...and this sounds really stupid but how do i change it from running lean or rich? or set timing?

 

fix the exhaust leak then look at the O2 sensor
if it were one cylinder with an issue (leaking injector, etc) then the whole exhaust manifold would glow?... probably not.
look at what's common between all cylinders.

The computer figures that out for you. First you need to make sure that all of the sensors are working properly. Have you tried pulling the codes? All it takes is a paper clip & a couple of minutes. Do a search & you will find what you need. If you have limited experience with vehicles then perhaps you should find someone in your area who can give you a hand.

Don't go & start doing everything mentioned above at one time! Fix your exhaust leak (OK YOU DID THAT) now pull the codes & proceed from there one at a time. Other wise you will end up messing things up even more. Just trying to help you by going one step at a time.

There are a few things that could both make your engine run rich & lean. Is this the 22R or the 3VZE?

 

Check timing. I used to have to adjust mine to get it to pass emissions and it would glow after driving it home.

 

I believe that the exhaust glows when its leaned out not rich

 

its a 22re and it doesnt pull any codes i was thinkin timing also im gonna try that what should i set it at?

 

I'm pretty sure that exhaust it hotter when you run lean, at least that's how aircraft engines are...

Has to do with less fuel to cool the cylinder and carry away some of the heat after it burns.

 

after fixing the exhaust leak from the manifold and timing it it runs way better and after a lil highway run no glow so so far so good

 

I have 95 3vze with same problem I just bought and fixed truck been sitting up 3 years
