scary thing happened to me, now questions

over the past few days, my truck was makin this whining noise when i left of the gas, i just dismissed it because it always does that. but then the whining turned into like a grinding noise and i started to get scared. Then on my way home last night, i was headed down a big hill and i heard a big pop or snap or somethin. It sounded at first like a ujoint in my front drive shaft cuz it felt like it was draggin and hoppin up. So i pulled over, shut my truck off, looked around my truck and underneath of it for the driveshaft hangin down, it was still attatched so now i'm lost. It still drives and goes thru all the gears, 4x4 still works, so i have no idea what the heck happened. It drives like normal until i press the clutch or let it coast with no gas, then it feels like my wheel is about to fall off, it shakes and like goes faster than the other wheel and then bounces off something? If that makes any sense to you at all. Well any input would be great, thank you

sounds like a cv problem but that shouldnt happen if your hubs are unlocked try havin someone drive slow so you can see if the cv axle on that side is turning

From the way you explained the whining sound, it reminds me of the rear diff. I know from experience and so do many others on yotatech that when the diff. gets low on gear oil it likes to scream when you let off the gas. Plus depending on the possible damage to the ring or pinion your truck may still drive easily.

So for easiest of issues, drain your rear diff and check for metal in the oil, then do the same for the tranny. That is where my diagnosis would start

i found the problem thank god... i replaced the pinion seal over chirstmas break and i never put loctite or punched the nut so it wouldnt come back off, well, it did ha ha, with a big bang and gear lube everwhere... i dont think (aka, hope) that it hurt the ring or pinion but i plan on changing them after basics, which is only a month away, so it should be good till then... just glad i didnt explode my ring and pinion, that would ruin my day haha

From the symptoms you're describing, I'd be surprised if there is no damage on your gears...

he probably has done some damage, but I would just take it easy the next month on it, and regear it
