This one has me stumped...85 22re Auto that sat for 1 year before I bought it. occasional miss at idle and it stumbles before taking off when you crack the throttle open quickly. more aparent in neutral. Seems to run fine, but gutless at speed. I think it's a lean miss.

Checked compression 135 on every cylinder, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, base timing. Drain tank new fuel, new fuel filter, Cleaned TB, checked and set TPS by the book, swapped MAF, Swapped 02, checked vacume lines

Any ideas? Thanks!

 

Possibly an injector issue or pressure reg. at the fuel rail. Also have you checked the ERG, modulator and vaccum advance unit? You might be bleeding off vaccum through a leak on the lower diaphram.

 

Check mechanical advance too, those weights can bind up and not move.

 

Unless anyone wants to steer elsewhere, was planning to

1. Check fuel pressure at the rail--anyone have any cheap ways to do this?
2. Check EGR for leaks
3. Change injectors with a spare set


where's the mechanical advance on a 22re?

Hate to ask the obvious, but it is throwing any CEL codes? When you swapped out the MAF, did you check for any cracks or vacuum leaks around the intake tubes? I a long crack on the underside of my tube where it mounts to the throttle body and gave similar symptoms. Spray carb cleaner around the plenum and MAF to see if it revs (vacuum leak)?

 

No CEL and did the carb cleaner trick. Replaced all the vacuum lines. I'm not going to say there isn't a vacuum leak, but I couldn't find one.

 

Poor performance at idle/accelleration is probably the most common bitch about any vehicle and can be the most time consuming to track down. It might be a couple of things not working 100% and it might be just one. I had the same symptoms and tracked it down to 3 bad/poorly working parts. Bad vacuum advance unit, bad ERG modulator and partically working HAC valve. All vacuum related in one form or another. If you have the FSM and a vacuum gun, you can go through each emisson part under the hood and verify how well it works. Process of elimination. Also check the BVSV valve any related vacuum relays on the passenger side behind the battery. Sometimes the loss of vacuum comes from a defective part such as the diaphrams in the vacuum advance unit.

 

Do you see any difference in conditions when engine is cold vs hot? Did you drain/fill the coolant? If so, did you "burp" it (remove all air)?

 

no difference hot or cold. didn't change the coolant yet

 

Hey Bud, you and I are in the same boat. Check the temp sending unit. If that's not working, it will tell the computer the motor is colder than it is and it'll dump fuel and pull timing out. If that doesn't work, let me know what you do eventually find, lol.


I'm still working on getting all the gas out of mine, but I'm on tank number 2 and it's getting better. The sender did WONDERS for me though.
