87 4x4 pickup fan turning on and off at high rpms

what causes this?? At high rpms its turning on and off while in idle mode before the choke kicks in. And while im going around 50-60 mph it sometimes turns on and off. anyone???Thanks in advance

fan clutch causes that. pretty normal. when the temp of the air is below a certain amount, the clutch releases and sort of 'free wheels' so the coolant in the radiator doesn't get too cold, then locks up when the air temp gets too high.

yeh It sometimes turns on and off I can hear it engage cuz my belt squeaks (loose?) thanks for the info, I couldnt figure out why it was engaging and disengaging at random times
