... or exploding fan? At first I wasn't sure they sounded so similar. Quite startling.

Options? I'm looking around local wreckers to see if I can find a replacement, but I got to thinking that it'll just be a matter of time till it happens again to the 17 yr. old replacement, no?

I've read about the electric fan, but I'm not interested in that route.

Pics of the damage would be nice, if you can. I've never heard of an engine fan coming apart (but I'm somewhat new to Toyota 4Runners).

 

Mine blew apart and poked holes in the radiator hose, blew out chunks of the airbox thingy, and busted my radiator.

Not to mention it left about 15 little mountains in the hood.

I think the shroud wasn't installed correctly by the last person who workd on it (not me) and it fell off into the fan.

 

Yep. That's what it looks like and that's what happened.

I'm bitter about it.

Did your "Rear Anti-Lock Brakes" light come on? Mine did and i'm not too sure why...

My ol 89 Isuzu did that at 6500 RPMs... dented the hood, tore the radiator all to hell, demolished the hoses, and not to mention scared the piss outta me

 

No...Maybe a wire or two got knocked loose...

 

My friend had a 4 blade metal fan blade let loose at 8500 rpm in his Pinto (circle track car, this was about 14 years ago) - there was a semi circular hole through his fender - we knew when it let loose, so we found the car that was running next to him at the time and found it in their engine . . . . impressive amount of kinetic energy

 

There is a fix, of sorts, for this.

The 88-93 V6 used a fan with an outer ring. The problem was, this ring added enough weight that over time, the fan would fatigue and crack. The fix, is to go to Toyota, and buy a BRAND NEW 94-95 V6 fan. These fans are under $110(even less if you order from Strap22 or toyotapartsales.com) and effectively fix the problem. Less outer rotating mass means a more stable fan, and no more exploding fan problem.

i just got back from moses lake fixing my friends bmw, which his fan also blew apart and shredded his radiator, hoses, etc...

Id look into an electric one with a good grill on it.

 

Had to modify the cost in my post a little bit, dealer list is $114.16.

If anyone is interested in this swap, i can sell it to them for $102 plus shipping.

 

same explosion happened on my girlfriends 4runner, i wasnt there when it hapened but when i popped the hood there has a gaping hole in the battery, battery fluid everywhere and another hole right through the air cleaner box and air filter! super bummer and the hood has several dents right above the fan, got some photos too, how fast does it spin? like 1800rpm?

Lucky you's. My 78 VW scirocco decided to lunch the alternator fan and blew two holes through the hood, one hole out through the high beam on the driver's side, and dented the firewall thrice.

 

i have yet to experience an exploding fan. but I got close to it happening to me. The false water pump had the rod push out and made all of my belts pop off, it was about 1/2 an inch from the radiator. heh

 

The outer ring on mine popped about two years ago but the fan blades are still intact. One dent in the hood, shredded hoses, and a few pinholes in my brand new radiator. Replaced the hoses and cracked an egg in the radiator...hasn't leaked a drop since. Hah.

It's still on my list of things to replace in the near future. Just did the R150F swap so the wallet's kinda thin at the moment.

 

I didn't have the fan explode on me, just the bearing seize up with a following of screeching and black smoke from under the hood. Toyota wanted $700 for the whole thing so I tried to press the bearing out and cracked the aluminum housing, so I chopped it out and put in an electric fan.
