rear bumper build 88 4runner

i started on my rear bumper and have only been able to work on it for 2 days. i did cheat and copy a lot from all pro and mc but i designed it up on the computer and i cut it and bent it, my dad did most of the welding because i am still learning, but i did do a lot of it today. so if the welds look bad, i'm a beginner.

this is before

brackets

i cut the ends on an angle to add just a few style points

beginning right

beginning left

hopefully tomorrow and friday i can get the welds completely done and it painted.

oh yeah and the tube you see going up the side is going to be the start of the exo cage, and the back support for the roof rack.

You might want to beef up the brackets a little more.

i thought the same thing too. one of my buddies runs a fab shop in town here and he said he uses the same size brackets i did, so now i can either cut out 2 more and weld them together or test these out and see how they do. i like making my own stuff though

its a shittybilt "rock crawler" bumper. It has D-rings and was 100 bucks so I grabbed it... In march I get a 26 day bonus from work so that will either go into the heep or if I can find a cheap yota or samurai. Either way it'll be fun.

i'm not going to have as much time as i thought today. i took it off to put the top cross bar part on and haven't even gotten to it yet. i'm closing up all of the welds and for a beginner, some of those big gaps just turn into bigger holes. thats taking up most of my time today.

i added 2 more pieces that run from my exocage down to the top tube on the bumper. i'll have some pictures maybe later on today or sometime.

Looking good.

The biggest thing that I notice are the mounts. It's hard to tell how thick they are from the pictures. I would add some lateral (side to side) pieces to them for strength. If you get bumped or pull from the bumper it will want to move to the side.

the brackets are 1/4 in thick. so they are ok, but today i did add braces to the insides and i'm currently working on bracing. each bracket will have 2 braces, one inside and one outside, and at the end of the bumper where it wraps around, there will be a brace running from there to the frame.

thanks for all the help and ideas guys. if you see anything else you would add, let me know. i'm open to anything that will help.

looks good, what size pipe you using? 2" or 1 1/2". Try turning your heat (amps) down or just let off the weld and let it cool down a little bit before you start welding again. That will help with the burn through. all in all it looks good

the lower pipe is 1 1/2 and the upper pipe and the exo is 1 1/4. but really on pipe inch and a half is like almost 2 and 1 1/4 is like 1 3/4. alright thanks man. i'll give that a shot tomorrow when i head back down.

update pictures of what i did today will be up tomorrow!

here's an update, we're finishing welding on it tonight and if it ever warms back up, i can paint it and get the rest of it on there.

now that school has started back it will probably go even slower than before especially if it doesn't warm up for me to paint them.

I would add some support to the "wings" coming back towards the frame, or even triangulating the corner.

I find that the side takes quite a bit of lateral load.

this time i'm ahead of ya haha. i have those peices made. they will run from near the ends of the wings or ends up towards the frame. we are putting those one last to be the last part of the brace. and i will probably run another from the bracket the opposite way of the existing braces(back to the overkill statement), very true. thanks again! i cut a gusset for the sliders today. i just have to fit it and make a few more likeit and measure the rest for the front braces. thanks for the lookout!

looks good, but its a good thing you are bracing those 1/4" brackets because they will bend like paper other wise. Ask me how I know....

Oh and clean off the rust before ya weld.
