rear bumper build 88 4runner

i can guess that you used 1/4 brackets and they broke or bent ha. yeah those braces make it a lot stronger. i make throw some more on the other side of the brackets and the 2 off of the wings down the side.
i cleaned off the areas of rust before we welded. and this week i'm going to sand it and get it ready for paint too.
but just to make you happy: how do you know? haha

looks good .... keep practicing your welding .... pipe or tube is not easy to learn on ..... try running some flat beads on plate ... you will have it in no time ... keep up the good work ... now i just need to find time to work on my pos

i have been practicing. i did a little bit of the finish up welds w/ a mig and it looked better. i got most of it painted today but ran out of supplies. tomorrow i should have it fully painted and if i get done w/ my cv axle replacement in time, hopefully i can have the bumper on and the rack mounted to it and the supports coming off of the wings. i've got to start with mods to my sliders sometime soon too. probably next week, i think.

ok guys, sorry its taking so long but my camera is currently MIA. it somehow got missplaced at the shop. but the good news is the bumper is done! the only thing left is to mount the rack to the top of it. looks great and i love it! hopefully i can get it tested out soon. and the CV surgery was a success!

everything that i used, was free. thats why its made out of pipe haha. all pipe, plate, welder and tools i can use anytime i want as long as i'm making it for me, the few items i've done for business i've had to pay dad's boss $15 bucks rent. he is pretty cool with just letting me use anything they have laying around outside at the shop. i wish i could help you out there but truth is i paid nothing haha except my own time.

i've seen pipe work very well, and i've seen i fail tremendously... all depends on how the welds are and how well its braced and gusseted off in my opinion. not all bumpers and sliders are made out of dom either, i've seen more out of hrew than dom.
but really, tube is better than pipe. but i have free unlimited resources of pipe so if i have enough and its free for me to strengthen it up with braces and all... i'm going for it.

another add on to the pipe questions...
i do not plan for this bumper to last the entire time i have the truck. i am a college student and pipe was free, so for the wheeling i do, which i have never bottomed out in the back even w/ stock bumper, i think pipe will do me fine. the sliders are pipe to and i dont' plan to be bouncing around hard or anything. but even if i do, i think with the way this is all built it should do the job fine.
when the jobs and engineering internships come so will the SAS and exocage with new bumpers and sliders all made out of tubing. thats when my wheeling will become a lot more agressive.
if something does happen to the pipe though... oh well dumb decision on my part. but i honestly believe that everything will work out fine. i'm adding gussets to the sliders(will help a lot) and maybe add another brace from bumper to frame on the back. i don't think i'm in any danger just yet. if and when i get to the point to where i will need seriously stronger bumpers... all of this will be cut off and maybe even sold to help pay for it. cutting it off won't be hard to do either. i tested the areas i would have to cut off and either a port-a-band will fit or a grinder or saw will.
