Unhappy oil pressure guage. 1988 3.0

well, i own a new oil pressure unit, but the guage went up really high, even when the engine was off, and then died.

i tried the wire to the ground test: to test the guage, and it sparked (once ) and hasn't done anything since.= the book said it would report the guage to show signs of life...but none were seen.

any ideas ?

i really like the oil pressure guages and have a 3rd party one.

so,
should/ could i just insert the new unit in the same place, and shove the new guage in the dash where the oem one lives ?>

any help is welcome

during a rebuild of the 3.0, i got a new oem oil pressure unit i screwed into the block, next to the oil filter.. (2 months ago)
it always reported a weak amount of oil pressure.

one night, i parked the trruck, and it reported a very high amount of oil pressure.
next day, it stopped working..

?
i read the manual, and it suggested to take the single wire into the oil pressure unit, and ground it..and that grounding would make the guage fly up or show signs of life..

well.
when i did that, it sparked.
and i saw nothing

i need help w/that..

now, i have a 3rd party oil pressure unit, (*still in the box) and wonder, if i can/should install that (if everyone has done this)...or does everyone just run a weak oil pressure unit (as oem apparently is)

when you grounded the wire out how long did you hold it there? did you have someone in the cab to watch the gauge?

i used an aligator clip...
so, it was planted firmly on the body, metal, enough to spark once, and long enough to watch the guage move if it was an hour hand.
