Hi guys,

I'm looking at the possibiity of towning my '98 4runner, v6 automatic, across country within the next couple of months.

My question to you is this; if I use a tow dolly and tow the runner in a forward direction with the front wheels up on the dolly and the back tires on the ground and put the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in park will I be okay with the rear dirveline in place or should I remove it?

REMOVE IT..only 8 bolts .. its ok if your going like 30minutes to an hour away but cross country not worth ruining your tranny!
i tow my 4runner with my hilux all the time on a dolly... its stick though... long trips i remove driveshaft

Remove the driveshaft. Parking brake off. Front wheels on the tow dolly.

Alright guys,

If I pull the driveshag in preparation, will I be able to drive the vehicle up on the tow dolly in front wheel drive? Will I lose a ton of Tranny fluid from the back of the output shaft housing when I do that?

hrmmm you should be able to drive upon the tow dolly.. but if you keep it connected then drive on the dolly the truck will be JACKED UP so it would be easyier to get at the rear shaft...
you can just disconnect it from the rear diff and zip tie it up out of the way!

I would use some heavy wire to keep the driveshaft out of the way of the rearend. I wouldn't want to drop the DS on the road somewhere.

 

zip ties.. the tie with wire then use some tape for backup!
