are IFS frames interchangeable?
does anyone know for a fact that the 2nd gen and 3rd gen pickup IFS frames are interchangeable? my '91's pu frame is kind of rusty and i think i have to do a frame swap soon.
i persoanally think they are but it'd be good to know from the people that have personal experience.
thanks for all the input.

well I would only hope that he figured he would at least have to stick with the same basic model, like standard cab, motor, 2wd or 4wd, ect...

I meant if the wheelbase, width, track and dimension are identical.
thanks guys.

I swapped frames for my 87 ... but i found an identical frame. But i personally know how hard it can be to find a frame! HOLY CRAP! lol i got really lucky
I know the rear springs were different lengths, so the front hangar or rear shackle hangar might be moved. But overall I'm willing to bet they're are the same. Drivetrains were the same, front suspension is unchanged. And cabs are the same size (visually)
I'd get out the tape measure and just go and see if the 4 cab mounts line up, if they do i bet the bed does as well.
I said "bet" a lot here as I've never compared the two. But i can't imagine what they'd of changed. Crossmembers are the same (for tranny).

I have seen 2nd gen beds on 3rd gens and vicea versa here in town... or that could be 2nd gen cab on a 3rd gen chassis or vice versa lol
so either they just did straight up swap or modified.
bottom line its doable.
just dont get a 2wd frame, those ARE different.

All I need to do is swapping the cab and bed but since I'm zero banana, I need less work possible for myself.
Keep the info coming fellas.

If you want to find out for sure, look at the FSMs. I know the 2nd gen FSM has the frame dimensions for all of the models (under Vehicle Exterior, Body Mechanical, Body Dimensions).
Edit: You may also want to look at the extent of the rust. Mine was all surface rust. A little sand blasting and a recoat was all it needed.

Along the same lines. Are all of the IFS parts interchangable?
Can you put 1st or 2nd gen 2WD 4Runner spindles on a 85 2WD pickup?
Sorry for the odd question. Looking for brake upgrade options for a 2WD "race" truck.
Thank you.

but to answer your question, i have no idea. They're probably different because even the 2wd runners had the 4wd chassis, unlike 2wd trucks ..which have a different chassis than any of the lot. but i could be wrong

why couldn't they just settle on the one design and make them all the 4wd style chassis and suspention, just the 2wd's wouldn't have a t-case, front d-shaft, front diff, and CVs...

I did a frame swap on my '87 to a '92 frame. Everything bolted up. I know there are a few differences, but nothing that will stop you from bolting everything up without problems. FYI, the '87 was a single cab 4 cyl 4x4, as was the donor frame.
Good luck!
Good luck!
