Battery ground?

Ok, my '83 pickup is having a hard time turning over even when boosting. I did just notice though that the battery is only ground to the body right beside it AND when I was trying to boost it I smelled melting plastic and found that it is the insulation on the ground cable. Where should I run ground cables to is a thicker one fine going to the body or should there be more?

Battery - fender. Fender - Frame, Frame - EngineBlock. then there is usually a CylinderHead - Firewall ground. Most of my grounds are out of 1/0 welding cable.

Since the cranking circuit is the highest draw from the battery it is essential to have good cables from the battery to the starter AND from battery ground to the BLOCK.

My cables are done that way on my cruiser. It is the required way to do it on fire/rescue equipment (it HAS to start).

I also have a large braided ground strap between the body/frame to the engine block to complete the ground for the body. My winch goes directly to my battery pos and neg.
