Well first i'll start with the problem. I have a 1986 toyota 22re 5 speed ifs. the problem is that the two bolt holes in the bell housing for the starter are completely smooth. The bolts being for some reason are grade 8 bolts are prefect. So my two options are to use helicoils or drill the holes bigger and retap the holes. Oh and my truck in a winter beater that i only plan on hacing for another year till i am done college. Now i have access to m14 x 1.25 helicoil kit but these are only as a spark plug replacement kit. I can't seen to find a 1.25 thread pitch or even a UNF threaded tap. I know from my engineering courses that you should be using a fine threaded fastener because they are better for vibration and more contact area on the threads. So is it better to use the helicoils for the sparkplug kit. Or use a larger tap with a UNC thread/ grade 8 bolts and hope for the best. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

 

I'm not sure about the 86, but on the 93s those holes are suppost to be smooth. The bolt goes though the hole and a nut goes on the other side:

I seem to remember the starter bolts threading into the starter itself on my old 22RE also -- if the holes are completely smooth (like they were drilled), that would not from stripped bolts. besides, if the bolts caused that the bolt itself, grade 8 or otherwise, would be messed up

 

Well there were no bolts. So ether someone removed them and tapped the holes because all i have is a two bolts.

 

There should only be two bolts. Rather, the top one is a stud and the bottom a bolt.

If the holes are smooth, probably someone buggered them up and drilled them. They are supposed to be threaded. They are on my '86, anyway.

On the other hand, if the motor is not original to the '86.......ie. someone put a later model in??? then it may be a different story.

 

The holes on the bell-housing should be threaded. The top one should have a stud installed. It's that way on both my 88 and 91.
