swaping 86 22re for an 88 22re

hi all i am about to dive head first into my first engine rebuild and engine swap. i have an 88 22re that i bought for the rebuild because my 86 pick up is my daily driver. my question is do i need the computer and wiring harness from the 88 truck or do i just use all the sensors and EFI from my 86 engine? i have calculated it out and it looks like it will run me around $900-$1000 to rebuild the engine does that sound about right? that includes my donor block which has already been ruff bored and once i get my pistons will be honed for free. i will also have to get a new head since the one that came with the engine is cracked. which would be easier buying a new head and reusing my valve train and cam or get a new complete head? which would be cheaper? any tips or tricks i need to know about before i start? thanks for your time.

If you swap all the sensors and stuff from the '86 you can keep all the wiring and ECU. Might save all the '88 sensors and what not, if they are the same connector and have the same resistances, likely they are compatible.

Hard to beat and EngineBuilder (http://www.engnbldr.com/) head, ready to go and you can get a little more pep than stock.

maybe we should simplify this a little bit:
If you're going to take the longblock assembly from an 88 (block and head only... maybe water and oil pump too) and put it into the 86, you should not have any problems. I took the longblock from an 88 22r and put it into a 91 which was a 22re and have had no issues. But then, everything from the 91: intake, exhaust, distributor, external coolant passages, etc., was put on the 22r engine. Like I said EVERYTHING except the head and block was changed.
If you're thinking about bringing other things from the 88 into the 86 you may have problems with sensors, injectors, etc.
