I'm trying to do an auto to manual swap on my 86. And can't figure out if I should do a double transfer case instead of just one. Primarily will be my wheeling rig. Steep hills, nasty ruts, mud, some rocks, stumps...is my terrain. No sand or "just" rock. What do you think? And the main purpose it to crawl slower right?

Sorry for so many questions.

Also, what transfer cases would I use? Would I use both?

(May seem like a stupid question...but sometimes two different transfer cases are used to create a dual transfer case setup...i.e. np203/205)

 

uhm... i would def use the marlin doubler . thats actually what i want to do with my truck here soon.

 

In this situation you really don't need one, I think a locker would be better suited to your purposes.

 

Yeah...probably. I'm trying to find a christmas present around $200. I'll probably spend close to a $1k on my truck in the next couple of months

 

go wheel it once you get your tranny and standard tcase in. if you feel that you would benefit from dual t's, then go and do it

 

how bout rear springs and lose those blocks? or a used tranny

the more gearing options u have, the better.

 

You know what they say....."if you have to ask a question like this......!" Go the the martin crawler site, and shoot him an email explaining exactly what your thoughts/plans are for the rig, and see what he would suggest. Maybe just a single 4.7 box instead of duals since your not building a dedicated rock rig, ya know? And gear and lock the rear. Either Aussie or an e-locker if you can find 1......

 

If you climb some rocky hills and dont think your gearing is low enough, your truck would benefit...

 

Tranny is on the way for $100 Just need a t-case

How would I know what to get? Is it for a 4" lift? Do I need 5" springs? I plan on eventually doing an SAS on this baby...not in the next year or so though. I'm keeping this baby forever! haha

Yeah...stock chevy leafs. My truck looks like it has more than 3" of lift though...

 

my chevy springs with about 5" shackles got me around 3" lift and they are soft as can be. VERY flexy and i no longer bottom out on my bumpstops (or maybe thats why my Rancho shocks exploded...) when i go over railroad tracks at 25

 

uhm u could get ridiculous flex with chevy leafs in the back....as long as they are mounted properly.

 

Oh I see...still don't think 3" would be enough...considering this is what my truck looks like...
