I ordered some drive shaft bolts and lock washers from Marlin Crawler. When I recieved the package, the lock washers look like they have not been split. They basically look like regular flat washers, only a lot thicker. I called Marlin Crawler to ask about it, and the guy I talked to said all of their new lock washers they got from Toyota are like this and it should be fine. Does anyone know anything about this? How can it help lock the bolt without being split?

I do not have any pics of them, but picture a regular lock washer but completely flat and with out the little split in it.

It does not have any grooves in it.

 

So its just a thick washer then?

 

maybe its made of a soft material the bolt/nut bites into?

 

I would ship them back to MC, Then just go get some new actual lock washers..

I know it sounds weird, but I've had problems with rear DS bolts, and just the other day on the trail I lost all 4 bolts on my front DS, TC side. Thought I snapped a CV but it was just the cardian joint falling onto the crossmember.
Today I got Grade 8 bolts, Lock washers, and the nylock nuts for them, Shouldnt have a problem with them again *knock on wood*
Tonight just to make sure, when i was right around the corner from home I threw it in 4H and when i was home they didnt seem to un-tourqe at all.

spring washers? do they have an up and down curve to them? maybe just throw on some regular lock washers...
if you felt like putting them to the test throw that bolt somewhere on a 2 stroke dirtbike and see when it falls off.

 

Personally, I use flange bolts that have little "teeth" in the built in washer/flange to bite into the yoke/flange and then blue loctite them.

They happen to be metric grade 10.9 (similar to SAE Grade 8), but I don't think that's necessary.

 

They did not appear to have an up and down curve, but seemed to not sit flat on the bolts, so maybe they have a very slight curve that locks. I already put the washers on the truck, but I have been keeping an eye on it. If the bolts start to loosen I will post back with some pics.

 

The conical washers I have used have a stamp or number on one side. That side should face you and will gain pressure as they are flattened out.

As long as they are facing in they should be fine.

 

just use blue LocTite and you'll be fine. the lock washers on my driveshaft are completely flat and have been for years, a dab of blue LocTite and I haven't seen one come loose yet

 

If they have some concave to them, we called the Bell-ville washers. If they are like that they hold like a bitch.

 

I really should have took a picture before I put them on the truck! I looked up conical and bell ville washers, as suggested above, and they look a lot like these:

I am thinking you are correct in that they are some kind of spring washers.

 

We use them on al the high voltage transmission line connections(46,115,230 and 500kv) I have never went back and found a loose one, even when we work them hot and go back they are tight. Aslo on random stuff we bolt together on the trucks and stuff. We used one under the head of the bolt and the nutalong with flat washers.
