No freeway power in fifth

Alright here it goes, '88 pickup, 22re, 31x10.50x15, stock gearing, stock height, im not sure, the torsion bar might be cranked but i dont know how to tell. but why do i have absolutely no power on the freeway? 4th gear pulls fine but fifth sucks. should i get a cold air intake to increase hp, or headers? whats a mod i can do to help with power on the highway?

From: Cincinnati, Ohio - Amelia is the exact place. There is no one else on this site from where I am. Seems like everyone is from Cali or Washington. I guess I need to move.

There is no power in 5th gear, its basically an overdrive. Regardless of what motor you have, 3VZ-E or 22-RE.

Gears...

Maybe a good tune up with a good new coil...

Tail Wind?

Only drive downhill?

Advance your timing...

Replace engine with bigger one!

sounds pretty normal. one thing you can do that really helps is get yourself some good tunes and a frosty cold beverage to keep your mind off gettin' passed all day long. that or re-gear your diffs to 4.56 or 4.88 and get back into the power band.

When you state 'stock gearing', do you mean stock for 225/15 tires or stock for 31/15 tires? If your truck was originally sold with the itty-bitty Ford Falcon tires(as mine was), then with 31's it'll have no poop in 5th. I changed my tires to 31", the gearing to 4.56(from 4.10 stock), and with my recent effort to maximize fuel economy, I've found that it can actually accelerate up a slight hill on the interstate in 5th!

in the stock form ( gearing and tires ) as it was said..5th is for overdrive and a slug on the highway...
Do a regear, kill the clutch fan and go electric.
A cold air intake will help some...
make some mods and post your results..

It's been a little while since I have done this but you have to ground out a plug under the hood, use a timing light, and very slightly turn the distributor. I'd have to check in the shop manual. I've done this on a few trucks and I get a taste more power out of it. You can do it sans timing light, by listening to the truck. I advanced mine a little too far and got some pinging so I retarded it a little, now it's good. I'm running a slight advance, modified intake, 4:88, 33 inch tires, and I can pull hills in 5th. I actually drive around town in 5th gear going 45 and it will still pull.

Re-gear the diffs to 4.88's The 22re's don't have much power, as stated (112 crank hp or so?). And add to the fact that your truck weighs almost 4,000lbs...

Tune up and re-gear if you got the money (or go to a smaller tire).

Guessing you are not agreeing and that's okay. I live around 2100ft above sea level so I advanced my timing slightly. Not saying you would get a crap ton of power out of it, just runs better and pick up is a bit better. I swapped out my exhaust for a system that matched the size of the exhaust manifold so I could keep backpressure up a bit as well. After owning my sixth Toy I know what works for me. Oh and I use 10w40 oil.
