Hey fellow yota techers, I have a question. Whats the optimum height and wheel size I can go without wearing the engine out? I have an 88' 4wd pickup with a 4 cyl 2.4 22re.

 

how and where do you envision driving the truck?
mostly off road?
some off, some on road?
mostly on road?
all on road?

if any off road, what kind of off road?
mud?
rocks?
trails / fire roads?
sand / dunes?

 

The best way to answer that is to figure out what you want to do with your rig (as seen in post number 2).

If you're going for a survival type build that will be used for a daily driver then consider going with 31-33 inch tires since they can be replaced easily and you can still drive it with no lift and the stock gears for a while. If you want some "Swampthingish" buggy then you can go with 44's and change the gearing to 6.xx's to maintain almost stock gearing, although the axle shafts may not like it and you'll have to either lift several inches it or remove all the sheet metal.

Some folks here have gone with no lift and only 31's and regeared the diffs (me) and some others have gone with 4" of lift and are running 35's on the stock gears. That little 22re under the hood will take a lot of abuse. It all depends on how you drive it and how much you're willing to give up in performance and fuel economy.

Let us know what you have in mind and we can make a more precise recommendation.

Find out your axle code, and we'll help ya decode it. It'll tell you what your gearing is, so you figure out whether you want to re-gear to run bigger tires, to do the most with what ya got in order to keep the price down. Decide what kind of terrain you're most likely to go offroading (just knocking around trails, hitting the mud pit, cruising the beach and dunes, or trying to crawl over rocks). Then you can figure out your budget and build.

 

 

31 inch no lift, no re-gear. If you are off-roading it get some lockers. Done.

33x10.5x16 3.5" offset, 4.88 gears,
2" body lift (or 1" BL and 1.5" BJ spacers and AAL's rear?)

me on the other hand have a 4" procomp stage 2 lift up front, 4-5" lift rear springs, 31's (were 28 stock), whatever stock gears are on an base 88 5sp stick 22re 4runner. I kinda want to regear two steps higher and go with 33's, but not in a hurry. Not sure I wanna trade off my 22-25mpg on the highway yet for more wind resistance than I already have.

 

abe we had this talk your running 4.10's like the rest of us unless you have a one of a kind stock truck here lol kinda like me with coolant probes that dont seem stock lol
