I actually find the A-Bats fairly attractive. Yes, they're prototypes, but they're supposed to be hybrid! Thats cool to me! And they're supposed to be about the same size as the older trucks! Yeah, they look like Avalanches and Ridgelines...but take that silly fin off the rear of the cab and I think they're gorgeous!
I cant remember, but I think they might be uni-bodies though.....that would be really dumb.

I would consider taking the Hilux over the A-Bat IF the Hilux was turbo diesel... especially if I was paying the purchase price ;-)

I dig the A-bat... unibody is the way of he future I fear. Heep Cherokees aren't bad off road trucks with some reinforcement of the structure (remember that they are constructed for a consumer of which probably 5% will push the design's limits... they are overbuilt for the majority of their customers). As long as Toyota doesn't mount the engine transverse, it is rear well drive with a selective 4WD and a real low range, I'll seriously consider getting one.

Diesel is the way of the future... Uni body IS a terrible idea and will never be used on any truck that needs to be relaible and tough for many years. Saying Cherokees are tough is really really false, they squeek and rattle quite quickly if used off-road at all. A-Bat is a neat concept as long as it doesn't take away from us getting a small Diesel and more good body on frame trucks from Toyta in the future.

Cheers

Dave

It depends on what you want to use it for.

For rock crawling, I wouldn't trade my 85 for anything.

For an (sorry TC, but I have to say it) expedition rig, I'd take a 99-04 4runner or Tacoma.

For something kinda badass to drive everyday... The A-Bat is kinda cool.

They are considering putting a (6.1??)L Diesel, still in the works due to huge gas prices.

^ Because the same guy (Kevin Hunter) was in charge of both the A-BAT and RSC projects.

K, RSC is the best Toyota car ever thought of, i wish they made it.
Second, vehicles now days are not ment for off roading like they where 95 down.

Vehicles today are all aimed towards "Family comfort" and "Fuel Economy"(well except the FJC, LC70series). So by todays standards the ABAT will fit perfectly into todays life style. The last place you can find a Real off road mean machine toyota is austrailia. and its the LC pick-up or the troop carrier.

So on this forum, yes everone is more likely to love the 1980 Hilux/PUP over the ABAT, but thats because the ABAT is not aimed at us in the off road community like the FJC is. the ABAT is more family/soccer mom friendly.

Sorry I'm ignorant. What's the difference that makes a vehicle "unibody", as opposed to having a frame?

Well, at least a few more seem to kinda sorta like A-BAT, better than the last thread almost a year ago. What a difference $4/gal. gas makes. I think we'll see a production version. It'll be a perfect all-weather (but not off-road) utility vehicle and 35 mpg with PZEV ratings that should qualify for the upcoming $7,000 alternative fueled vehicle credit enacted as part of the economic bailout package. I'll take one in black (but keep the FJ, thanks).

The RSC looks like something I used to build out of legos 25 years ago... I wonder where I left that.

The A-bat reminds me of a scrunched up Honda truck, or a futuristic Subaru Brat.
