need some help picking out 'new' 22re

ok.... so out of the blue my #4 rod broke putting a baseball size hole in each side of the block [the starter is not looking so good].... i still haven't found the piston, so i'm guessing its lodged into the head.
the block is done, just about cut in half. the head i'd guess is pretty banged up at best. so i believe i need a long block and i have no core....

i can't really afford anything like a long block from LCe or DOA. and would like to stay local if possible to avoid shipping and for easy warranty should i recieve a dud. i will handle the install. for now keeping the block stock and put the money into the head/intake

so the question is who makes a good rebuild?

or should i buy one of these 'factory crate motors' that are left-overs from toyota i've seen these for $$1,475 plus $145 shipping = $1,620 total. no core required and 12month warranty, original head casting. are the newer thicker ones really better?[claimed to be on most new rebuilds, and what LCE uses]

so what's your $.02? if i had my choice it would be an '87 turbo swap but thats to much of a impossible wiring headache for my '95 [if i had an 87/88 it would be on!] and i want to drive this thing to the ski hill in a few months....

are you looking for a shortblock or longblock? you said you were thinking about spending some extra cash on the head so a shortblock may be the better way, since you could probably find a decent block in a salvage yard and rebuild it yourself then hook yourself up with a modded head and cam from engnbldr or elsewhere for around 550.

*edit- I had a whole schpeel about 'chargin' it but decided not to post it, unless you want.

right now i'm thinking stock long block/cam/header [reuse what i have]....

if my head is toasted [probably, nicely toasted] then maybe the short block/LCE ProEFI head would just a little more....

i only want to do this job once this year.... the last engine job of this type i did [nissan z24] ended in a badly blown head gasket less then 5000miles later, no fun....

i like the idea of these 'new' toyota blocks, not rebuilt....

if this is 22rte then i'm listening..... for the most part this idea is shoved into back of my head between the 3link and fj80 axle swap.... oh and 1kz-te with stacks ha....

Maybe bondo up the hole and use it as a core.

My $.02: I had an ATK 22RE long block installed in the fall of 2003; It had problems from the start: Timing chain when cold, eventually rod/crank-type knocking sounds when hot, sprung an oil leak from the front crank seal right after the 3 year/30K mile warranty past; wasted $2k on repairs a year before junking it. Choices for you: 1) get a 22RE from a salvage yard, and find an honest, skilled mechanic who can personally rebuild a 22RE, or 2) if that story about the "left over" 22RE longblocks from Toyota is true, get one of those. BTW, I've read in this and other forums that the 22RE was not not offered in Japan(it was a similar engine, but not identical?), so if you go that way make sure it's got all the smog holes and attachment points in the right places.

japan and some foreign markets had a 21r, which is a hair under 2.0 (1994cc / 84mm bore)- actually smaller than a 20r (2189cc / 88.5mm bore) and definitely not 2.4(2366cc / 92mm bore) (stroke is the same at 89mm), and those are often rebadged as 20r/22r/re's for export to the USA, and are technically illegal to install in a vehicle in the USA since emissions certification was never done on the 21r for USA.

right, for my nissan's and a friends supra we scored really cheap jap motors, but not so with the 22re. i will probably get one of these factory short blocks and reuse my intake
