time to go tire shopping

I need new tires, currently running BF Goodrich all terrain 275/70/16's. Actually, one tire is pretty new (sidewall was damaged so had to buy new one recently) so I would only need 3 new tires if I buy same kind or I am thinking about just buying 4 new mickey thompson baja mtz 265/75/16's. the only off-roading I do is around my pasture (not any, really) but I like the aggressive looking tread and white letters. Any opinions appreciated, thanks

Goodyear MTR, Nitto Open County and BFG Mud Terrain. Any of these are good and aggressive.

If you don't do much off roading you may be better off with an Agressive looking A/T

another question, do off-road tires tend to wear faster?

yes they wear faster. and in my experience any thing in the mickey thompson line wears super fast.

i like the bfg's the best but ive heard the mtz's have the best tread wear of those 3. i personnally love the look of mud terrains and the functionality of course, id recomend the mtz's for your application

I got over 60K miles out of some BFG AT knockoffs. (Sidewinder AT) For what you do that design will be great. Mickey's wear fast. And usually the more aggressive the tire the faster they wear and the less MPG you will get.

I got Toyo AT's this time around and they look great. Only have maybe 100 miles on them.

Nice to see someone somewhat local.

Really??? I have never heard this X-AWDriver. I'm not calling you a liar by any means, but you'd prefer the Nitto TGs over the BFG ATs? I'm currently torn between the two is why I'm asking you.

x3 on the Nitto TGs! I've logged almost 15K on mine and they have yet to show signs of wear. Plus they're great offroad too.

Definitely have my vote for many years to come.

I agree with X-AWDriver, i had a set of Toyo open country A/Ts and the tread lasted but the tires got ROCK hard and would lose traction left and right on dry pavement. I love my cooper stt's (mud terranes) but in the slightest rain they love to break loose to :/

An A/T is the way to go for the pavement.

I agree with X-AWDriver. I have run both and prefer the Nittos over the BFG A/Ts.

I've driven several Toyotas shod with BFGs throught the '90s and they are awesome off road and very durable but on-road they leave a bit to be desired in wet and dry traction and they seem to harden up before 50k which made them even worse off road.

I was recommended the Nittos by Bamachem (remember him?) who said they'd fit my DD duties and the intermediate trails I do fine and they cost almost $100 less than the BFGs and I'm glad I tried them out since I'll never put a BFG on my Runner and my next set will be TGs. I've got over 40k on mine right now and should see another 12k before they need replacing which for me should be in the spring.

Off road the Nittos are pretty comparable to the BFGs but BFGs do have a bit more beef on the side lugs.

BFGs do have the best looking lettering on the sidewalls of any tire period and the tread pattern and side lugs look cool too but they are a bit overrated to just be slapping on a truck for looks and if the vehicle never sees off road.

Most tire places push BFGs on people that have no clue to what they need in a tire;they even tried to push them on my mom's '99 Runner and she stated she will never go off road and they still said they were the best tire for the money. My mom got Yoko Geolandars AT-Ss instead which was a wiser and cheaper choice.
