Is it safe for me to run 37/12.50/r15 SSRs with a 4.88 gear ratio?

Also if I get a body lift for my 85 toyota pickup am I going to have to change any brake lines etc?

Body lifts don't give anything in usable suspension travel. So depends on you. Mall crawler or a real wheeler.

 

A lot of folks poo-poo body lifts because they don't add suspension travel. However they do make room for bigger tires.

You can make your suspension more flexible but if you stuff your tires in the fender wells that's when you risk dusting a birfield, so the body lift might help there.

Unless you live in a very flat area of the country, you will quickly tire of 4:88s and 37's....unless you have a significantly more powerful engine than the 22RE.

You could always dual case your rig to gear down and crawl but with your proposed combo you won't have a lot of high speed umpf.

 

do you have a suspension lift already or just stock? 37s would rub with only a body lift. i seen a guy with a 4inch suspension lift and 36s and they rubed a little

 

Shoot! I'm up 4.5" or so and my 33's rub with very little articulation. Especially if I'm turning.

To answer your question. You would need a hell of a body lift to clear 37s. and they would still rub the frame. But with a combo of body and suspension, you can do it nicely. Probably about 4+" of suspension and 2.5+ body.
You will also more than likely want to run 5.29s in the axles for that size tire.

you will rub i had 35" on my 82 with a 5"skyjacker lift suspention lift.like was said above if you don't regear to at least 529.your truck will fall flat on its face. IMO

 

For your sake, I hope you're joking. Body lifts are awsume! Added clearance without hardly any increase in COG.

Back to the op... No you will not have to get longer brake lines for a body lift. But to run 37" tires without a bunch of trimming, you will need more lift then that.

4.88's and 37" tires is safe, but silly. You would need at least 5.29's to get near stock..

 

I know of someone that runs a 5" suspension lift, dual cases, 37's, and he has 5:29's. Drives like a champ on the road with the 5:29 and 37 combo. Of course he had to "trim" the fenders quite a bit to fit the tires. I just put a 3" body lift on my truck, and got some 2-3" lift springs on today. Just for craps and giggles I mounted a spare 37 that the guy had and it barely fit in the rear, but would have been fine if the fenders were trimmed.

The problem with 37s is not the LIFT, body or suspension, you are going to be all in the firewall, period.

Fit sure. Drive on a flat rode with little turning. Okay. Wheel it. No.

 

Wow I just realized how stupid my my title sounded lol. Im running 35/12.50/r15 SSRs on my 85 pickup now with 4.88s. I now know that if i dont want my truck to be sluggish I should get 5.29s. I was thinking about getting an inch or 2 of body lift to add to my 8 inches of suspension just, so I would know I could fit 37s, and I was curious if I would have to change anything when I lift the body?

Haha all bodylift to fit 37s would be stupid as he11!!

 

Custom 8" suspension? Is your '85 a solid axle? I fit 37's on a '90 IFS no problems with 4" suspension and 3" body lift. Only rubs at extreme angles, no trimming.

I thought about maybe jumping to 35s but was unsure if it would be too much.

 

I've ran the 37's since late 2003 and no complaints. I try not to hammer on the gas when I'm wheeling and I haven't broken anything due to large tire size.

35's will get you anywhere you want to go anyway! You just have to be a little more selective about your line

 

I say go 5.29s, I will be completelly skipping 4.88 and going straight to them. Besides you know that your not going to be happy with 35s forever. It does suck nearly double the price just to get bigger tires though.

 

Since I don't daily drive my Yota anymore. It will probably get 5.29s next. That way I'm lower geared and have to option of going to 35 or more without changing axle gears again.
