any ideas on here? would like a lil more power

i would like to get a little more power out of my 1994 4runner v6 would i gain some good low-end power if i put a big exhaust on it, any other easy mods i can do to make my yota have more power? its always been a lil under powered i thought it was due to not having the o2 sensor hooked up but it is know and it runs better but doesnt have the power i would like

Here it comes...

1. Search.
2. Don't expect much more power- I swear I get another 10-15 Hp when I change my plugs and wires.
3. Don't waste the money on upgrades. Be happy with it, treat it right, and it'll treat you right. The engine's probably already putting out as much power as it has...
4. Expect people to tell you to swap to a 3.4.

and as far as a swap, why go 3.4 when you can go, LEXUS V8

gearing makes a big difference..chances are your buddy has his truck geared correctly for the larger tires OR might just have a stronger motor..

Are you running larger than stock tires?

you want more power from the 3.0? Here is what i did to achieve 125HP out of 150 (dynotested).
ISR
removed CAT and Muffler, replaced with a resignator
engine flush twice
k&n drop in filter
clean air filter every few months
35PSI with 31's---45PSI with 265's
5 speed manual transmission helps
new clutch

and there are a few other things that i can't remember, i'll post if i remember.

I kept the exhaust size stock, bigger would probably do better.

Hey Guys,

A louder exaust will give an illusion of more power, do a side by side 0 to 60mph, with the other truck. I think you'll be suprised.

Well in most cases you might be right kiwi. But i do feel a much better throttle response in the lower RPM's and the noise is not like straight pipe so it does not sound powerful. I'm still to pit my truck against a stock 4runner on the track. But i bet if you had downey ceramic headers and fatter exhaust alround you would gain even more power because there is less restiction for the engine which helps.

I'm going to go with a rather unorthodox approach and say:

you can make more power with that engine past an intake and exhaust.

DOA makes an aggressive cam for the 3VZE. They also have ported/polished cylinder heads with bigger valves (supposedly 33hp) for the 3VZE for $400. I think you send in your heads though.

I've been meaning to email them and get a dyno sheet for proof, but we'll see.

An engine swap isn't necessary to gain decent power. If you don't have the money (a few grand) to do an engine swap, maybe spring for the cam or the cylinder heads. Not a popular choice with most people, but popular isn't always your only or best solution.

thanks my truck is all stock i got 31x10.5's and my truck has stock 4.88 gears, we did a side by side on pavement and he was faster, and his truck is pushin 250k while my engine i got out of a junk yard should only be pushing 180k, like i said the only thing done to his i think is the exhaust im guessing the exhuast will give you low end powa?

I wouldn't go bigger than a 2.25" exhaust since anything bigger kills the lowend and moves the power gain up closer to redline which isn't where you really need it.
