I need some advice 22r alternator problem
I just switched out a 1983 22r into my 1987 4x4. I removed the stock 87 22r. I got everything hooked up the truck will start and run, but the alternator is not charging the battery.(Alternator is brand new) I had to cut the plug that goes to the alternator from the chassis, and I tried splicing the wires but if I unhook the battery the truck dies! I have the main wire coming off the alternator bolt, and then 3 small wires. I have tried splicing them almost every possible way but truck still dies when I take the battery off. I have tried to look at the book, but it seems like I did everything right, is there something else to check? The fuses all looked good.

deathcouger is right, the 87 alternator has the voltage regulator attached, where as in an 83 its on the drivers side inner fender. the alternator should always match the harness, even the early ones that we externally regulated are wired differnt in differnt years

would that be like a chevy alternator? Does the 1 wire just go to the battery and thats all the wires you have to worry about? What about it fitting the mounting brackets? I have an 87 alternator, but I think I will have to pull the motor back out to get the brackets for the 87 on.

search the fora here. I wrote up a bit about wiring the alternator and which wire goes where. Not exactly a 1 wire install, but all the details.

OK, I finally got around and installed the 87 alternator and mounting brackets and returned the truck back to stock on that part of it. I respliced the wires back to the original plug for the 87 alternator. I started the truck and removed the battery cable and the truck dies. The alternator seemed to work when I bought the truck but not 100% sure. Also, the 87 alternator has been setting out in the weather for about 2 months and has been rained on and wet. Do you think the alternator is just bad or.....? All the fuses in the black fuse box are good. Any other ideas?

I bought a brand new alternator today and put it on the truck. I started the truck up, and let it run for a minute. The charge light on the dash wont go off, and when the truck is running and I pull the positive cable off the battery the truck dies. What else could it be?
