What your timing set to on your 22RE??

Mines been at 5 BTDC since i put the reman in about 8k ago, but tonight i set it to 10 BTDC. I noticed some gain in performance and hopefully some in economy (we'll see) but am a little worried about valve ping. When i test drove it i could hear what sounded like valve ping but it was intermediate(sp?) with a lot of load on the engine i thought i could hear it, does it one second, then stops, then again?

Whats your timing set at? when did you notice any ping?
Possible its something else causing the ping?

Thanks for your help all.

I am running a 268 torquer cam so its not much help to you that i am running 10 btdc but my advise is advance it untill it pings then back it off untill it just stops, run it several days and check your power and mileage.

The base timing should be set with the jumper installed, disconnecting the computer from the situation. All motors will vary a small amount in what they like for timing, especially if there are any changes to the internals (cam, decking, bore size, etc). The noise you hear isn't valves, it's the piston; ping occurs when there is ignition of fuel occurring too early (pre-ignition) and then the piston is coming up and slamming into this explosion. The top of the piston is slamming INTO the ignited fuel charge, causing the noise you hear, which is why pre-ignition can blow a hole in the top of your piston. Back off (retard) the timing a little bit and find the place where the ping disappears. That's where the motor will like it best, just shy of ping with a little room for advance when you accelerate.

I know how to adjust the timing, I know what OE spec is, I set it to 10 degrees BTDC and drove it listening for ping. What I herd was very erratic, intermediate.
and im used to hearing ping either happening or not, not erratically. I did notice a difference in power down low.

I was wondering what others timing was at, and if it's even ping im hearing.

i just had the top end rebuilt and set it to 8* to try to give a little extra power to make up for the 31's that are slowing it down (4.10s). I am getting pinging with regular, and now with mid grade too since its ethanol crap, unless I use chevron. i think i'm gonna have to back it off next chance i get.

my best test for actual ping is taking off from stopped on a mild incline. let out the clutch without overthrottling, and right at the power transfer you'll get that gurgle sound. (ugh like nails on blackboard to me)

good luck workin that out man!

the engine is detonating and the knock sensor is retarding the timing til it stops. that's why the noise is come and go.

i get this noise on flat ground unless i rev it up to like 2000rpms and let the clutch out slow. my timing is set at 5* rebuilt motor with less then 10k on it. what would cause this? it drives me nuts.
