electric shock from coil lead

I have an intermittent hesitation or flutter on my 94 22RE and was going through a few suspect areas this morning. After taking off each ignition chord and ohming them out, I put them back on and fired it up, opened up the throttle and wiggled each cable to see if there was any intermittent behaviour. When I pressed on the top of the plug at the coil, I got the snot zapped out of me. I thought for sure I had found the culprit, but cant find any cracks on the coil or the cable/boot. So I swapped end for end on the cable to see if it was the boot or the coil. Got zapped even worse!

Anyone have any input as to whether this is "normal". My gut says absolutely not, but I have been wrong before. If not normal, would this indicate the coil pack was "leaking" charge (e.g. cracked somewhere)?

I don't have another coil or plug to swap out. Suggestions?

Aaron

you again? lol, j/k

are you getting the wire end all the way down into the coil tower?
try working the boot up the cable and using a small screwdriver to force the terminal all the way down.

Well, I just felt so good about myself today that I though I would offer you or thook a chance to bring me down a notch.

Pretty sure the crown is seated deeply. Just to be sure, I pushed the blade of a screwdriver down on the rubber cap and felt no further movement.

I know the voltage is pretty beastly (50K Volts) coming out of the coil, but can't quite convence myself that it should be able to arc through the plastic housing or molded cap unless there was a exposure somewhere.

lol... anyways, I don't think that's your problem. even though the spark did arc to your finger, there's no evidence it's arcing to the coil case.
how's the humidity today?

Virginia = 100% humidity

BTW, do you know off hand what the resistance should be for a coil wire (coil to distributor)?

Your coil probably has a crack in it and thats why your getting zapped, and thats probably whats causing all or part of the hesitation your getting. the crack can be so small that you may not be able to see it. it might be a good time to give your ignition system a tune up with new coil, spark plugs and plyg wires.

Um....yeah, go ahead and try that for us all, Aaron. Can't say I'll be likely to join you on that expirament, though. However, I'm sure Abe will be excitedly first in line to follow suit. I'll have your sign waiting for you...lol!

All I can say is you shouldn't be getting zapped. It gets pretty humid here, too, and I've never been zapped. A crack sounds plausible, but I'd have to look more into that kind of problem before I could totally support it.

Yeah...I know. I'm just no help. Atleast I had the chance to jab Abe once again. My day is complete now. Yippee!

I think myyota maybe right. I did some reading and that would explain your symptoms.

Here's the FSM testing and resistances...

I got zapped on mine the other day. Brand new Denso wireset, new dist. cap, everything was on good and coated with dielectric grease.

Unfortunately, I was wearing a wet bathing suit. And guess what part of me was leaned on the bumper.

My hand and arm took most of the shock. My weewee just tingled a little.

It wasn't bad, actually, and it was cheaper than going on a date... hm.

You know I'd laugh a lot harder about this except I'm still having bad dreams about the time I tinkled on an electric fence while dove hunting.

The hunting stopped for the day.
