i havnt been able to find anything looking on the forums about removing the pitot bearing(i think thats the pilot bearing lol), but then again im a lazy reader. i got a new one with my mc clutch kit and good thing cause as it turns out mine's not turning so good, but how do u take it out, iv heard of a couple weird methods i don't know, what do u guys do to change it out? is there a special puller i can get?

fill hole with grease get a bolt thats almost the same size as hole and hit with hammer.. add a little more grease repeat till she pops... then clean the grease?

 

I use this exact method all the time. It is messy, but it works great.

I usually use a bolt that is slightly smaller than the ID of the pilot bearing, then wrap electrical tape around the shank of the bolt so that it fits the ID of the bushing perfectly. A few taps, a little more grease, and a few more taps usually does the trick.

 

I've used the grease method, works great except for cleaning the mess. Someone, obviously smarter than me, gave me a tip to use melted candle wax, works just as well but it's a lot easier to clean. And if you spill some you can wax your legs at the same time

PS just don't go using the wife's/girlfriend's fancy scented candles, they won't be amused

 

I've heard a slice of wonder bread works too.

 

chop up a candle and pack it in there, like you would grease. unlike grease it won't come out around the little bearings. i have used this method twice and prefer it over grease, hands down.

yeah or what i did was fill like everyone else and get a socket 1/4 in size put a pen cap in the socket hole (where the wrench goes) and fill the socket with grease and wack away fill again and wack somemore

 

grease is the best method! its never failed me!

 

Grease thing didn't work for me so I used a slide hammer.

 

U can borrow a slide hammer from the autozone around my house. Just tell them what you are using it for and they'll get you the right one.

 

ya the greese method didn't work for me, after the second hit when i went to reapply more greese it just poped out the outer cover/dust seal/whatever its called on the bearing and now grease is just ouzing out between the bearings and not pushing out the bearing

 

Most times the grease method doesn't work I have found, since the grease gets around the bearings. So, i use this backyard method instead:

-Beat a 6" 3/8 extension into the hole, straight as possible.
-Slide the flywheel or some other heavy object onto the extenension.
-Clamp a pair of vice grips onto the end of the socket.
Use the Flywheel/heavy object like a slide hammer. It will pop right out, works like a charm every time I have used it.

p.s do you loose an extension using that method or does it escape unharmed?

 

it escapes generally unharmed the first time or two, but you tend to mushroom the head if you beat on it too much.

 

nice method, i ended up figuring out my own backyard method, i took the really long bolt i was using to pound the grease inside and cut a notch in one end so when pushed in i could hook it onto the bearing, then i threaded on a nut and followed it by sliding on the biggest socket i could find(big enough for the bearing to slide into, but still with a 1/2 drive so it wasnt too loose on the bolt) and there u have it a homemade puller that worked barely goodenough to get the job done lol

 

the candle wax works like a champ. it does not go around the dust shield like grease.

 

I use the SST... no mess

 

This sounds like a really good idea. Have you had any problems with the extension coming out without the pilot bearing, as you are pounding it out?
