Bottle jack on lifted truck

Bottle jack on lifted truck
I have the bottle jack that came with my truck. I want to do a bolt-on manual hub conversion for my 1995 4runner.
My question is it safe to use the bottle jack as long as I slide jack stands under the axle before I start doing work.
Anyone have experience with this?
p.s. I am also a cheap-o and most likely wouldn't have a use for a floor jack ever again (or so I think). I'd like to try to 'get away' with the stock jack as long as its safe.

Just drive it..if the hubs engage they work.....
I would recommend buying a nice floor jack....makes it so easy to just slide under an axle and start jacking up...much easier than the bottle jack

I have found that the stock mechanical bottle jacks are too small to reach to a useful height on my 4Runner (33 in tires) so I got large hydraulic bottle jack at the local auto parts store.
Bottle jacks themselves aren't dangerous as long as proper jacking techniques are used, but if you're afraid to use it in this situation, how will you use it when you get a flat and NEED it?

Aye, Captain Safety is here to tell you to USE jackstands too.....
NEVER use only the jack for support when working...
I have seen many bottle jacks fail (Havent seen a Toyota one fail yet though)

True that. Off to harbor freight! I cringe at the thought of a flat with my 33's. That is an expensive spare to have around...

Don't be a Moron like this guy and his wife I recently saw at Home Depot.
She said 'Honey, won't these blocks work for working on your car? They are only $2 each" She was referring to CinderBlocks which have a habit of collapsing..
Always block your tires too with a wheel chock or angled piece of fire wood or something good and stable.
You can always use a piece of 2x12x12 under a bottle jack to gain a couple of inches.
Look at a 33x9.50 for a spare tire.

Like mentioned above, the stock jack is capable of doing it - as long as you have adequate access to a safe spot.
I would highly suggest getting a floor jack. You don't need anything fancy, just something that is rated a little bit over what you plan on using it for.
You could also get a set of Wheel Dolly's
Then, while your neighbor is asleep, jack up and move his car 100 yards down the road and face it the opposite direction.

About how much do those run? i could see endless pranks with those things and moving peoples/friends cars!

I'm very proud of the guy who knows the law and took on these people. Too many Americans don't stand up for their rights and I think its true to say that if we don't use our rights we will lose them.

You idea reminds me of in college when I left my Karmann Ghia unlocked. I got a call in the middle of the night from a guy claiming to be an Oregon State Trooper telling me my car was involved in a robbery. The 'tropper' was a friend of mine. They had pushed my car across campus...Good times
