Transmission pops hard out of reverse

Hey guys I have an 86 p/u with a 5 speed in it and it wont stay in reverse. I can can hold it there with my hand but it makes a very loud clunking and grinding noise. I know its a "rebuild" but i am looking for a more indepth answer. Does anyone know what that could be inside the tranny? I had this happen to my buddys mustang and we just replaced the reverse idler. Not sure if this is the samething on these trannys or not.

I'm not looking to buy a transmission but I will rebuild it myself if thats what it takes.

Thanks for the help

feces or shot... same thing.
maybe there are busted teeth on the gears or... ?
if it pops out, there are lateral forces being placed on the shift forks by the gears.

(dang, the profanity filters are thorough.)

busted a tooth.. mine did that once and you had to hold it in gear and even then it popped out. embarrassing and not to mention not functional
my 5th had 3 teeth broken, one vaporized and the other 2 took out 4th and 5th gear too..

So i havent drivin it more than a mile since it happened... am i looking at possibly just a new reverse gear?

I just drained the lube and found a whole tooth.

I guess a chevy 350 and an aussie locker make the reverse gear the weak spot.

whatever it is, it needs torn down. so tear it apart and replace the broken things. you won't know until you're in the middle of it.

Shifting into reverse when not setting still, or popping the clutch in reverse make the reverse gear the weak link.

So I took it all a part today. Found the reverse idler gear is a bit scarred but not the problem. The smaller reverse drive gear is missing 5 teeth.

The one on the bottom, on the back shaft straight down from his finger.

I'm going to replace it and the reverse idler.

Does anyone know where I can find these gears? Toyota prices are over $150 a piece on them.

Thank Again

Hell, you could pick up a used transmission for 150 bucks! Try Dirtoyboy, he might be able to get you the parts...

you might want to try Malin Crawler, he might be able to hook you up as he does some great quality rebuilds -

I bought my heavy duty rebuilt W56 from him for ~$600 (local junkyards wanted $600, and Toyota prices for individual components were too high) and have been flogging on it with a Supra motor for the last 3 years with no issues so far

We bought a used trans for parts when the reverse blew. The parts one was blown too.

Then those pieces chew up the 5th gear teeth
