locker opinions wanted
I know, I know...another one of these.
I am looking to get 5.29 gears and some form of lockers in the next couple weeks.
If you had your choice, would you:
1. get Aussie Lockers front and rear
2. get a spool in the rear and a detroit in the front
This is only driven on the street to the trail and when I want, it is not a DD. The cost of the two is the same, basically.
If a mod can add a poll with the two options...

I just added a lock right in the rear of my DD, i really like it.
It has some quirks, if you shift hard, but other than that and if you take it smooth, then its unnoticeable to me.
I hear aussies are good, thats what i originally wanted, But if its not a DD, maybe a spool would be in order, IDK its really up to you and what you would feel comfortable with imo.

Uh... Dual Aussies.
Spools are made for strength, but they suck major on road. They can also suck offroad too.
Dual aussies are going to probably cost you less than a spool and detroit, though hard to say, and they will perform the same on the trail. Not only that, but they will be LOTS better on the road.
Aussies are also going to lessen the shock to the rear end. The 8" diff is okay, but not super strong. You stand a better chance of not breaking with the aussies.

Okay, the spool itself is stronger than the aussies. HOWEVER, you'd have to be running upwards of 38s for that to even be a factor. Even there, you will break the axle shafts long before the diff. If you were running 44's, and a full float cromo rear end, I would say spool it, hands down.
The spool can suck offroad because it is always there. At least with the aussies you can get them to ratchet and make tight corners, that sort of thing.
Next is the cost. If they are the same, its a no brainer. You don't need the strength of a spool, unless i missed a "40's are on" post somewhere. Second, the on road ride is TONS better.
I could see doing the spool if it were going to save money, but since it won't, get the set up that will work best for the wheeling you do.

I'm going to second the aussies fr and rr. especially for a swing use truck. even for a 100% trail truck, I still dont think I'd go spooled or welded in back unless i just really needed to save some money.

If you can afford it put a Detroit in back otherwise, go with an Aussie or Lock-Rite (in that order of choice) and transplant a TRD e-locker up (you can pick up used thirds for about $400) front. My truck is my daily driver/work truck and offroader so it sees a lot of street/highway miles.....it gets driven to the trail (no matter how far from home) and back again, sometimes on snowy, icy roads so, a selectable up front was a must. Don't think I don't wheel this thing, it spends a lot of time on the rocky trails of the western Sierras but, I only engage the front locker when absolutley necessary which affords me better maneuverability on the tight trails I wheel and is probably why my stock birfields haven't exploded yet.....knock on wood. Full time front lockers suck, my Bronco is set up that way and sometimes I just hate it, just sometimes.......I love that truck!

I am doing my rear Aussie now, at least hope to have it done tomorrow. The front will be ordered soon. Front and rear lockers for around $500 plus a little for shipping is not too bad of deal...they are going in my '81 Trekker.
Too bad the e-locker is not in the cards. Having the selectable in my Tacoma is awesome....

I just put a high pinion electric locker in my offroad rig and it is sweet, driving on the easy tight trails because you can steer great with it disingaged. I scored mine on craigs list new for five hundred total was less than seven. I been welded in rear since 98 that will save you some money
