I have a gas mileage problem. I have a 1987 toyota 4runner sr5 turbo minus the turbo, turbo is currently off. Two weeks ago I was getting 14mpg now Im getting 10mpg. I put a new muffler on, new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, air filter and topped off all fluids. What would make my mileage drop?

 

Reset ECU.

Bad O2 sensor, bad gas, driving habits maybe.

 

how do i reset the ecu and how do i check the o2 sensor

 

ok so i did some looking today and i found the problem my knock sensor was broken. this little plastic thing cost 169.89,any idea where i can get one for cheap? besides a junk yard

 

Try looking in the classifieds for people parting out. I tried looking at some sites, but they were more expensive.

 

why would you take the turbo off?

what was your MPG with the turbo?

 

there's a Pick A Part right up in San Berardino. $2 to get in and they've never checked my pants pockets yet . . .

knock sensors all pretty much work the same, as long as the connector plugs in and the part that screws into the block is the same it should work. I would imagine most Toyota sensors are the same

thanks. i went and got the sensor today and put it in. runs better now, but the a/t temp and charge still comes on at 30mph . any ideas? also how do i reset the ecu? the turbo was off when i baught the runner. i have everything for the turbo but the intake from the turbo to the intake manifold, and the junk yards around here dont have any turbo toyotas

 

reset ECU - disconnect negative battery terminal - smoke a cig, drink a beer or just wait 5 minutes and reconnect

charge light - you'll need to check voltage, it may be over or undercharging, last year my runner was overcharging whenever I spun it over 5500rpm regarless of vehicle speed - I think Autozone will test it for free if you take it off, but they might be able to test it on the car too, Sears could also test the charging system, but may charge, in either case it would be best to call first

A/T temp - check the trans fluid, low fluid will heat up faster - may be caused by weird voltage from the alternator, but I'm not really sure - address the charging problem first, but keep an eye on the A/T Temp to be safe

 

thanks again! auto zone did the test and everything was good ill check the trans fluid while i smoke a cig and drink a beer during the reset of the ecu

 

I checked all fluids again and reset the ECU waited 15-20 minutes. Then i drove a quarter mile and lights came back on. I wiggled some wires and stuff around while still running then turned off for 2 minutes started it back up and lights were off again like always. but this time they stayed off completely all the way home. I will see what happens tomorrow, will update you then. Thankyou

 

if there is a wire problem, it will be in the area you were just moving. most problems will occur where there is hard bend in the harness. If you carefully strip the plastic coating off the outside of that bunch and look closely, you might find a stretched wire or a break - hold one end of the wire and gently pull down the length of it, you will feel where the wire gets "thin" inside the insulation

 

ok so the lights have been coming on again a\t oil temp light, charge light, and brake light, so i did a diagnostic test on it #11 came up which is throttle position sensor, where is this located and can i clean it?

 

It looks like the FSM has it placed on the side of the TB next to the intake. Mind you that's on a N/A 93 22RE. You check the TPS with an ohmmeter per the FSM instructions and specs.

 

thanks for the info, but now there is anew issue. the truck runs fine, the battery is staying charged, and the alt test good, but theres no amps being read on the 60 amp alt. any thoughts?

 

do you mean no amperage showing on the dash? maybe a fuse has excused itself from operating? or possibly something in the wiring between the fuse block under the hood and the dash.

 

autozone hooked it to a tester while in the truck and running and it read full charge but no amps (alternator)
