IFS: Snap ring on CV axle new or re-use?

How often do yall replace the snap ring after pulling a CV axle? Looks like mine have only been out once (today)... should I make another trip to the Toyota dealer for new ones?

Also, what tricks are used to pull CV axles on the trail? I rented a slide puller, which worked great, but I don't own one.

thanks

i used one jack on opposite rear axle and one under the a arm as close to the outside of the truck as possible... only had to undo the 6 bolts and the hub and slide it out and the new one in no pounding studs or disconnecting balljoints

Oh yea, the CV comes right out, I meant the axle sliding out of the diff ... which I guess you wouldn't need to do on the trail (normally) never mind that then...

Any thoughts on that snap ring, that goes on the axle, into the diff?

The snap ring at the stub end in the spindle - I re use them.

I think I have a few OEM new spares tho

The snap ring INSIDE the diff that retains the axle stub - I put new ones in.
But you shouldnt be messin with that to replace a CV axle.

Jeez I really threw this thread for a loop, the CV's have nothing to do with my question. Just the axles that go into the diff, after the CV's are out of the way (the stubby flange axle, and the long one in the tube on drivers side) thanks

Thanks. Yeah, I'm a little confused haha. CV's are out.

Ok, so 1 for new snap rings INSIDE the diff.

I reused mine. Unless you removed the rings from the axles themselves, they should still be ok.

get new ones if you're worried or break them, they should be reusable otherwise. I just put in new ones on my diffs because I broke both of the old ones installing them. Apparently I didn't use enough grease to hold them centered & they drooped as I hammered on the wood block; sheared them with very little effort.
