rtv sealant for the 3rd!!!!!!! need to know asap!!!

as the title says i need to know the rtv sealant used for the 3rd im taking it out and welding it so i need to put it back in anything i should know or whats the rtv im going to need for this

dont say anything about the welding of the 3rd i like it and im staying with it

dont need to use rtv.. i didnt because one of the botls snapped and i didnt have any replacments... it leaks a few drops a day..... its only a trail rig... the welded rear rocks!!!

i used the blue rtv

yeah well this is my dd oh god no he didnt did he just say what i think he said? yes thats right shes my dd!! so i think im goin gto be needing the rtv blue thank god i asked i was goin gto get the black lol



but as for my list of things to do at work tomorrow and yes im getting paid to to these to my rig is

weld the rear
weld a patch for the frame
weld the rear bumper back on (my 110# moster)
make up some 3in over shackles
and maybe do the funny welding over the rear end of the shocks that look like there going to fall off kinda thing you know they look like this from the back

tire / 3rd \ tire them shocks not sure yet though

but yeah im goin gto be doing the rear for sure tomorrow and ill try to get the rest done too!!!

man welded rearreally eats tires.. i swear just driving to the trail i can watch them go down .. when money allows i will trade it out... sucks balls on the road but offroad i wouldnt change it for the world!!

The black would work, but I've always used the red. I suppose blue would work, too. Just use something.....not nothin'!

X2...I use the red stuff, cuz I always have some kickin around....dont put it back together with no rtv, It WILL leak!! and gear oil is expen$ive!!

Either the red, or the Ultra Grey kind. They'll both work fine.

The blue will eventually deteriorate from the oil.

Marlin uses the Ultra Gray stuff, or get the Orange FIPG (Orange=gear oil use, Black=engine oil use) or paper gasket from Toyota.

I usually apply the sealant then let it skin over for 15-30 minutes befor einstalling the 3rd.

I use Toyota FIPG (black) which is for 'camshaft and oil pans' according to Toyota.

Remember that new silicone won't stick to old silicone, so cleanliness is really important. And remove all traces of the old gasket. Get in there with a razor, or sandpaper, etc.

The trick is to wipe the mating surfaces with gasoline to clean and primer them before applying FIPG. A small 1/8" bead will be more than adequate for sealing the 3rd. When you've bolted it in, as long as you have a small amount of squeeze out, you have adequate sealant.

I always tell people that but some people disagree. When I had a welded third in the rear of my old buggy it ate tires like crazy when it was on the street. Detroit Lockers are.....NICE and well worth the money, even on a trail only rig. Mine didn't see all that much pavement but it did have plates for a little while until johnny got to me one day.






I don't know for the life of me why I ever sold that thing. I really regret my irresponsible younger days.


Toyota black (like you'd use on a timing cover/oil pan) would work great. We used to use some type of grey sealant at the shop I worked at but I don't remember exactly what it was. I think you should be fine with pretty much any RTV. I've seen orange, blue and black on diffs that weren't leaking.

I have used grey and blue, its all good, but copper is the high heat stuff, like for turbos and stuff like that.

I do this, too. It's such a mess trying to line things up, otherwise. Plus, if you touch it....ooooo!....grody!

well my way to and from work is only about 20 miles and thats with 12 turns round trip including in and out of the driveway lol other then that its all stright and gravel turns nothing to major a few more turns from here to milwaukee but mah thats all high way

woooooo........

are welded rears good to use on the freeway at 70mph???? i just though of this

i used blue on mine. no leaks a year later. no a welded rear is not good for the highway... at all. the faster you are going the harder it will be to turn, especially on pavement. have fun.

You won't generally won't notice a spooled/welded rear on the interstate.

Just to repeat what 86tuning said, clean the mating surface really, really well. Scrape off all the gasket, give it a quick sand, and wipe it down real well with gasoline or brake cleaner to get off any oil/silicone/whatever residue. If you don't, it WILL leak. It's really less important what sealant you use than it is how well you prep the surface. Ask me how I know .

lol well its not leaking at all but it is where i had to weld a bolt in the rear cause the fill bolt striped out on me so i have to put a lil more weld there nothing big other then that its really good brakes are nice after a good bleeding and well the rears of these yotas are very light!!!! you can spin them around with ease!!!!! ask me how i know!


and as for the highway i just did about 93mph on the freeway on my way to appleton didnt even notice it was there and the roads up here are all 65-70 mph here in the sticks!!
