Aaaaaargh, broken lug stud!
Hey, I was wondering if anyone has had a broken lug stud. It seems that one of mine has been tightened to the point of being twisted off. I was looking at my truck this morning and found I only have five lugnuts and five studs on my left front wheel. How much of a PITA is this gonna be and how do I go about fixing it. Its a 4th Gen, but I'm guessing that Toyota used the same technology as on the earlier models. Your help is appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Some other guy said he broke one, those things are delicate for a truck, like their made of aluminum when I rotate my tires I put them on so light I feel their gonna fall off.
Either take it back to Toy or the guy who air guned your new wheels on, you should also check your other lugs, probably more than a few that are over tight

I am soooooo pissed right now, I looked at the thing and I want to replace the lugs themselves with stainless. The cheap A#% metal that was installed is a composite that seems like its made of aluminum. Does anyone know if stainless is an option for the lugs themselves? Thanks.
I also had one of the guys tell me he would replace it for free, but that still doesn't answer whether 8 of the front twelve are ready to come off!
The wheels are still worth the hassle. My daughter keeps telling me as we drive around, "that guy is looking at your truck". That makes ya feel kinda good at the minimum! (A dude today in a 470)
Thanks again,
Doug

Someone please tell me what I'm in for. I'm thinkin' a total removal of everything outside the CV, just to get those damn lugs off. No one has done this before? I'm begging for some insight, :wtf:

I have never had to re-plumb a broken lug, but I am sure it is a common occurance. I had the dealer rotate my tires and they informed me their umpa-lumpa over torqued a lug and it snapped off, they replaced it within the time I was having my oil changed.
I was impressed that at least they told me about it. Wish you luck.

take off the hub and hammer back the stud out and put a new one in. not hard i broke 4 lugs on my civic (ok not a truck but still)
just go get an impact wrench and a hub puller (kragen or something)but thats just my guess

Thanks for the heads up. I was hoping it wouldn't be too involved.
I guess I'll do it myself. Right now I can count to twenty, with my shoes off. I hope I can say the same next week!
Thanks again for the help!

"Take off the hub" would apply to a 86-95 IFS truck/4Runner.

Thanks for clearing that up Steve. I would've been stuck Bearing and Lugless going through a tantrem in the middle of my garage
about to run outta beer, that would've been a disaster!!!
Anyway, I was not happy about the idiots twisting on my lugs and found out that the Allied Wheels must be balanced while on the truck. They make revolutions and are balanced up to speeds of 100+ miles an hour. Don't ask why I found this one out, but (Shakey-shakey-shakey).
I am having a guy with one of these machines balance these wheels according to this info. He does the same on his Ferrari. Apparently thats the only way to ensure accuracy on his set up. This is what I'm told, does it sound right?
I will make sure he has an additional bearing for the hub when I take it in.
Thanks again, Doug

Stealer...........NOT!
Quick Update on the lug situation. I quickly became tired of the idiots at the Tire Shop and took my truck to the dealer, figured I'd bite the bullet and have them fix it and finally gimme my free oil change. Well, after they replaced my broken lug stud and my oil change, the service guy said he put it through under warranty even though it shouldn't have been
. My total cost today was $0.00, including tax. Germain Toyota did me right. Mark one up for the dealer today.
BTW: The lug studs have a cover on the back of the brake assembly which allows for easy access without removal of the hub. No hub bearing relpacement was needed.

The front lugs should be real easy. The proper way is to use a special lug press to push it rearward and out of the hub. Then put the new one in and use the nut to tighten it down and it draws it into the hub and you are done.
There should be enough room to do this without disassembling the hub assembly, well I hope anyway.
The way most do it is just beat the stud out of the hub with a BFH and a drift.

That is good to know. I never changed one but saw that they could be easily removed went the spindle was out. What I observed was durring my manual hub install.
Not a front stud change. Good to know thanks!

I will be tearing down my front hub to replace a bad wheel bearing real soon and I will double check to see if the studs can be replaced without taking it all apart and let you know for sure.
Of course the 4th gens might be a little bit different, but not likely. It should be a 10 minute job.

I waited at the dealer for this one, it took like 25 mins including an oil change. They came through in a big way. Once you remove the rotor, its a plate on the back and you're home free.

Glad you had so good service at the dealer, mine on the other hand does not like me cause I refuse to have them service my truck, they always wanna do something thats gonna cost me, and ontop of that it's like a freakin doctors office, I sware you go in all the techs are walkin around, the bays are empty but they still wait 30 minutes before they pull your truck in, when I go for my recall on the rear air Im takin my clothes off
see if they will move my truck along and get me out of their fast.
One thing Im gonna do is when I use up all my oil in the garage Im gonna start letting them do my oil changes, 20 minutes or free, oh yeah Im timing it
Im only at 6200 miles but do you think I should let them do the 15k service, take it to another shop for that stuff or let it ride till 30k

I plan on taking my to the dealer for the 15k service. If I were you, I'd do the same. Maybe we can get a loaner out of the deal. I'm going to try anyway. I don't want to have to wait there half the friggin' day. The main reason for me using the dealer is once, only once I used brake pads that were not Toyota and the brake dust was everywhere. I couldn't keep my wheels clean. I switched them asap and haven't used anything else.
BTW: My 95 Taco never saw the 15k service, unless the dealer did it when I traded it in at 120k.
