Who DDs There First Gen?

Who DDs there first Gen?

Any issues, quirks, etc?
Hard to get parts when it breaks?

Thinking about getting rid of the Heep for another Toyota.

Why? From your sig quote it looks like your ZJ is set up pretty good to play in. Are you needing something tamer to daily drive?

I dd mine, 20R, 5spd, Weber, 4" lift, 35" Krawlers, 4:10's flatdeck..

Its slow on steep hills but holds the speed limit, noisy inside probably because I have no floors, no sound deadening anymore, my exhaust ends leaks at the manifold and dumps at the back of the cab and the weber make a nice wooshing sound when you stand on it, its not that bad though, just put a good radio station or hook up my ipod and I dont mind it.

Everything works great, wipers, heat, lights, windows roll down nice, no leaks under neath the truck anymore, shifts nice.. mechanically its very solid.

Im not sure if every first gen does this but when I down shift the cab vibrates/shakes probably just a bit of axle wrap/baloony tires, And everyone else that has a first gen knows that there is not alot of room for anything, storage box fixes that though.

Since Yota Tony Posted this in the Pre 84 Folder he is referring to 1st Gen trucks..Price of gas killing you on the Jeep?
The trucks are approaching 30 years old, there are gonna be the associated problems with old age...
Just go through the truck and check it the basic worn out brakes, tie rod ends etc, fix that sort of stuff and they are reliable DD's.

Parts are really easy to get too, I dont remember ever having to order something in through a parts store, they have always had it in stock.

i DD my new (to me) 81, it doesn't win any races but it will hold its own in traffic. it doesn't perform or sound as cool as my chevy K1500 (dual flows), but it works for now until my build is done on my full size jeep.

I DD my 81 everyday without any problems and it is quite fun to drive. The ride isnt a caddy but i never have to worry about the 2 million potholes on the streets. Some people say it looks goofy/funny and ask whats the point of my truck, but it never ever brakes down or gives me any grief. I DD with 31s mostly and just swap tires whenever i go fishing and whatnot.

I to DD mine. Sure there are those summer days when I want A/C so I ride to work in the wifes Yaris. But most of the time im in my 80 first gen. I have a Chevy pickup for my tow vehicle but THE GAS it DRINKS. Besides who cares about the miles you run up on the first gen its paid for! And it has never let me down!

Either or.

ZJ is still being built.
With these gas prices it's killing me to drive it stock. I can't imagine with it with bigger rubber.

Besides that parts arnt that hard to get. I know someone in mississauaga that sells yota parts that could probably hook u up if you need it. He is a really good guy and has good prices. Goodluck on the search
Your talking about Tristan right?
I know him.

What's everyone getting out of a tank with there 1st gens?

My '83 is my daily driver... It's hard to keep up with the other traffic leaving stop lights, and it rides a little like a logging truck, and the cab is a little small, but those are just minor, I think a first gen Pickup is a great daily driver. I love driving my truck around town... I drove it 32 miles to work everyday as well. It seems like all the regulars use their first gen as a DD.

I hopefully will be soon. I was driving it around for a couple weeks. The heat's a bit weird but works, defrost works, so I can see on rainy or cold days. Window doesn't roll up all the way but I'll fix that before winter. Otherwise it was just fine. I was getting just under 20mpg, but that should improve once I've got it all put back together. Like others have said, it's a bit sluggish up hills but it goes quick from a stop light, and can keep up with traffic on the highway. It's an '83.

The computer in it says 9mpg.
Might end up with a 2nd gen truck as they are easier to find around here.
