Doing my first 4Runner timing belt.

This is my first time using a pulley puller. I cant seem to get this pulley off. In fact, I alredy bent the pulley because I applied too much force.

I included a picture. Am I doing this right? Why is the pulley not comming off. I applied PB blaster, but still no luck.

I have 94Runner. I need to get this pulley off so I can remove the bolt to remove the power steering pump and eventually replace the tensioner. Going underneath is not an option. It is too tight.

Resolved...I took the front bracket off instead. There are two bolts in front. The third bolt is behind the pump. It was tight, but being asian with small hands, I was able to shove my hand inside to get that bolt.

Now I am able to get to the tensioner...Did I use the tool correct? why is it not coming off for my future projects?

 

Thats not really the right tool for the job, since it just bends the pulley.

The way I do it at work, its to thread the nut back on a little ways, then tap on the nut with a soft hammer while pulling on the pulley with my hands. Works like a charm. Once its most of the way of, just wiggle the sumbitch til she pops off.

Its sort of a PITA to get off.

 

You may need a power steering pulley remover to get that pulley off if it is a pressed on type. Puller works on the center of the pulley, not on the outside.

 

Its not a presesd on pulley. But how would you use one of those style pullers anyways? There is nothing to attach it to?

 

I cant seem to get it off even tapping with hammer. The FSM shows it comes off though.

The pulley isnt bent too much...let me know if this is an issue...otherwise, I will keep it onthe PS pump. Hey, kinda fun doing this stuff.

i don't remember pulling that pulley when i did a t-belt on a 3vze.

 

On the 22RE the pulley just pulls off by hand with some consistent/even pressure. I think it has a woodruff key/groove that holds it in place.

 

I know this sounds completely retarded but all of this is covered in your handy dandy toyota factory service manual...just an idear

 

Nobody here can read/follow instructions on PAPER. It has to be on the internet.

 

The 3VZ is held on the exact same way. For those of you outside of the PNW where they salt the roads, it becomes a PITA to get off sometimes.

 

haha, my pulley came out on its own...while I was driving...

 

Unfortunately, the Factory Service Manual does not explain how to remove it. No pictures or details either. It just states to remove it. Luckily, my hand is so small, I was able to access the adjusting bolt. Getting that bolt back in will be tricky. There is no key on this pulley either.

 

I'm new on this forum, but I've read the past posts before for advice. I don't know if the original poster ever was successful, but here is what I did today. I've searched the internet for a good way, but nothing was there that was 99% effective, so I went another way. Its a permanent, but not extreme. Initial conditions: corner lights removed, front grill removed, radiator removed, fan removed. I believe in having the right tools for the job (most of the time), so I already had a pulley puller, and a pulley holder. I took a 3/8" metal biting drill bit, of the extra long variety. Twelve inches might work, but I used an 18" (actually an 18" extension, the one with set screws, and a normal bit, but it was a dewalt one with 3 flats). I passed that through a gap adjacent to the upper left of the AC condenser. I drilled 2 holes, 180 degrees apart centered around the nut, on the flat spot of the pulley. I put universal pulley holder in those holes, and the nut comes right off. By the way, to address the harsh comment about reading the FSM. I have them, and all it says is to hold the pulley with your hand and loosen. Useless, since the torque for that nut is something like 35 ft-lbs. The pulley was still tight on the shaft, so I used a pulley remover with the new holes. Its amazing that they didn't think to put holes on the pulley. The pulley remover was actually called a steering wheel remover when I bought it, but it works just fine.
