Companion Flange Vibration Issue

I'm having a vibration issue that starts around 50-55mph and goes away as soon as I hit 65 or so.

I've had the front end inspected by two different shops and had all 4 tires and wheels balanced twice and the problem is still there. I also replaced the two u joints on the rear drive shaft.


I've been doing some searching and I think it is related to the companion flange some way or another. I removed the driveshaft to check it out and found a strange looking nut with some kind of locknut inside the nut itself.

How do I go about removing this nut or tightening it? Can I just buy a new nut and lock ring or whatever it's called?

Any help/advice appreciated.


It's a 93 truck with the 22re 4wd.

The nut is staked. It's to prevent it from backing off. You can buy a new pinion seal nut from the dealer, the torque I believe is 145lbs?

How do I get the stake out?

I figured it would be the typical locknut with the cleavis pin through the middle of it.

Get your rear pinion angle checked. Inspect the springs for any sign of 'wrap', where the wheels cause the spring to twist. Get the driveshaft balance checked.

Now... where do you feel the vibration? Steering wheel? Floorboard? Seat?

I feel the vibration in the whole truck.


It seems odd that it goes away with higher speed.

Yeah,,, i had a weight come loose from the d/s and it caused all sorts of vibration @ 55, about a month later... lost another weight @ 85mph, and shortly after the weight flew off, so did my driveshaft!!

check for backlash in the rear diff

Actually, it isn't all that odd. Consider vibrations in the driveline like you would sound vibrations (music)- they have harmonics and sometimes the harmonic vibrations cancel out things and make the vibration seem different than it really is.

some is normal, if you can turn it like say 1/2" thats prob too much...or enough to feel it any way, my rear diff is a frankendiff, mad from parts of 3 or 4 others, it has tons of backlash, and i been runnin it for 50k, it will eventualy cause other probs, but its not the end of the world, if you were inclined to do so, you could pull it and adjust it.
Sweet, what part you from, I live in cornish, between standish and ossipee nh, I know of some CRAZY trails..see avatar

Mine has barely any at all. I'm going to call the dealer tommorrow and see how much a new pinion seal nut is and get it torqued on there to spec.

My u joints were shot from the PO so I can't imagine it's ever been touched and it's got 230k on it.




I'm from Rockland about 2 hours north of you. There are some crazy trails up here to.

http://www.eastcoastrover.com/ these guys here have a bunch of trails a mile or so from their shop that everyone rides on up my way.
