In the process of replacing the oil seal on my '84 4Runner 22R. When I removed the oil pump body, the driven gear separated from the body and stayed on the drive gear (gear teeth not engaged-gear just hanging on drive spline). I noticed an arrow mark on the outer edge. I believe it was pointing toward the upper left of the engine (when facing engine from front of vehicle) but am not sure.

Does this need to be in any certain position? I don't see any other marks to orient this mark with. I have been told the arrow mark serves no purpose, just re-install with arrow facing outward. Anyone here know otherwise about this?

This info not in FSM, and I have searched here, other sites, as well as Google search and have found no mention of this.

I thought the arrow was pointing up when I pulled the oil pump housing off , but since I haven't seen one before, I wanted another opinion. Thank you!

 

The marking is so that you don't flip the gear upside down.

As long as both gears have the marks on the same side, you're good to go.

 

86tuning: Just noticed your reply today! Almost had a heart attack when I read it but then realized that I installed the gears just as you described. I never could tell any difference in the marked side from the other. I just figured the marks should both be on the same side, so that is how I did it. No leaks so far and no evil sounds coming from the oil pump so I suppose all is well. Thanks!

 

Will this ruin the pump if the arrow is down?

 

All wrong. The mark is only there to tell you how to reinstall it. If it was down, reinstall it down. If it was up, reinstall it up. If you don't remember, look at the wear pattern. It's pretty obvious which way it goes back together. Hint: The crankshaft turns clockwise.

In reality though...it doesn't matter which way you reinstall it. If you switch it from what it was, then you'll have a fresh surface for wear where the gears mesh. And you'll basically have a half-new oil pump.
