22re dual row timing chain

I have heard that you can convert a 22re to a dual row timing chain. What all do you need to do? Any mods to timing cover or head? or is it a bolt on and go conversion?

All you need duel roll timing chain kit and it is a direct bolt on.

Just curious, but what're the advantages of dual timing chains? Fail safe for breakage to get you home?

The only reason I've used one in the past was on Chevy 350s with a steep cam and stronger valve springs. They put more of a load on the single row chain, so I put in a double-roller after snapping 2 stockers.

In the end, I ditched even the double-roller setups in favor of direct gear driven timing setups, but unfortunately there's not one out there for the 22re... yet... it would be cool though, because you can get the "loud" ones that sound awesome; like a supercharger; and their pretty much indestructible.

I would imagine they would be more reliable though, even if done to a stock, or semi-stock motor.

Less stretch. Longer time before you need to think about changing it.

Single chain motors, I'd think about replacing the chain and guides after 125k or so. Either way, it's a LONG time compared to a belt. A double row chain should outlast your rings.. :-)

81-82 had the dual row, 83-on had a single row.

When converting to a dual row on an 85-on you need the dual row timing cover and the rest of the kit from LCE. The cover from an 81-83 will NOT fit. Deck heights were different. and thus the 81-82 dual row timing chain is not a direct bolt on because they would be different heights. You "might" be able to get the 81-84 chain on and it "might" run, but because the length is off in the chain, it WILL affect cam to crank timing. Same way shaving a head or block will.

now on an 83-84 you can just use the timing cover and timing kit meant for the 81-82. What I am not 100% sure on is if those years (81-84) had the same oil pump and water pump, but I believe they were the same.

BUT its a 22re so the guides need to be changed anyway so why bother with a double row. Whats a chain, $20?
