If so, how do you put the "bolts" through the ball joint? I'm going to assume that they need pressed in, but is there another way?

I just put in new upper ball joints and spacers. Not sure what you are asking. The ball joint should have the studs(bolts) already attached. I had to tap mine out and use the longer versions with the spacer kit. If they are not attached, just tap them in with a small hammer or something.

The studs are not attached. They have splines that hold them in place. Tried a hammer, to no avail.

I thought about that, but the stud won't clear the upper control arm to put a nut on. I don't have a vice to hold it and try that either.

So is your problem getting studs out of an old balljoint or putting studs into a new balljoint?

If they're not going in because they're too tight, try putting the studs (bolts) in the freezer for a few hours.

hmmm... might work

Maybe this is my reason to get spacers. Although I don't really think I need them along with a 4" lift, or should I?

Sorry, I have no lift, so I can be of no assistance.

I resolved my issue by getting some allen bolts, nuts, and nylock nuts to keep the regular nuts from getting loose.

I also ran into a similar issue with rear brake shoes. There are a pair of studs that go in to mount the adjuster. Those had spines as well. I tried the freezer trick, no good. I ended up grinding the spines off with a Dremel.

Thought the freezer might help. My brother has to freeze sleeves before inserting them into a block. Mind you, he's sleeving Cat engines.
