84 Toyota Diesel

I am a newbie so I don't know if this should be in the newbie section or under this section for the year of truck. I did a search first but didn't really find what I was looking for so here goes...I am going after work today to look at a 1984 regular cab 4x4 diesel truck with a 5speed. I know I want a truck and a 4x4 and a diesel. However, I was under the impression that toyota didn't make a diesel truck for the U.S. that was a 4x4. The guy claims it is a all original truck. What should I look for? I have seen pics only at this point. The bed is shot(rust) it is a long bed(7' ?) suspension lift with 33" tires and a 2.4 diesel. Mileage unknown. Has been sitting awhile but will supposedly start. $1000. I really want it but I don't wanna get taken.

Diesel was made in the early 80's and stopped about 85 or so.

Why are you worried about it being original?

Not really worried just would like to know if the mileage on the truck holds true for the engine. Are those descent engines? Anything problematic about them?

specifically I don't know. But they are old mechanical diesel that get like 25-30 mpg, easy to work on and maintain. If you don't buy it please forward the info to me I am interested.

little late

hey, I have that exact same truck and it is original. It's the only year they made it. they were 2.2s before and only 2wd, then the 2.4 4x4 no turbo, then 2.5s with turbos after that for a few years before they stopped selling in the US. It's a great truck, I hope you bought it. If so, or not, let me know. the mpg the other guy quoted was moddest, I've been able to get near 40.

IMO If it will start and run original or not its worth a grand just for the drivetrain those trucks are indestructable. Buy it!

They put the N/A 2L diesel in 4x4 trucks in 84 and the turbo 2L-T version in them in 85, so it's quite possible that it's original. I've got an 84 diesel 4x4 and the VIN says that it's all original equipment.

They're slow as hell but the mileage is actually pretty good, just don't think you'll be cruising at much more than 65mph.

I know of a fleet of these trucks with this diesel engine (2WD) that have 1.5 million miles on them. Transmissions have been rebuilt a couple of times, the rear end once or twice, but the engine????? NEVER!!
